The Magna fuel computer i usually accurate to within 2%... whic is helpful, but doesnt improve the consumption

Something new might make more sense... with less weight, less driving wheels...

My V8 is a 93 model (hardly new) but it is injected, which is ****loads better than the carby of a few years (5) earlier.

The point is, for a newish Magna, thats still a mighty high average. I think you'd have to be sitting flat out on 180 for a few 100 k's to get it that high.

I keep having the exact same discussion with the geniuses at the dealer's service department.... my last Magna, also a 3.5 was almost 4L/100 km better on fuel

Nothing wrong with a Saxo as a first car, but modified??? Please, no!!
I guess you mean the usual badly fitting bodykit, oversized aftermarket 'zorst and boot full of bass speakers. You'll spend a small fortune and be left with a car with minimal resale value. Just look on eBay - pages and pages of half finished 'projects', usually with badly cracked filler where the bodykit was fitted, front spoiler smashed against every road bump, half covered in primer.

Don't try the usual "it's cheap to insure" line. A bog standard Saxo is cheap to insure, but you need to declare the ICE, alloys, bodykit, etc. All of which bumps up the premium. Unless you don't declare the mods, which means your policy becomes void and you are driving around uninsured.

I've nothing against modified cars as such. Dan's Escort Cossie lookalike may not be to everyone's taste but at least it appears to have the performance to match. No matter what you do to a Saxo it's only ever going to be a glorified shopping basket. The world needs another barried Saxo like I need a third armpit.

oh dear-you have put me off buying to modify now!-the only thing i wasn't gonna put in anyway was many speakers-im not into that style of music. i knew you payed more for modded engines but not for ice and bodykit etc...
i hate insurance now u said that...im guessing everyone hates them

In theory any non-standard equipment needs to be declared.

Expensive stereo = more chance that someone will put a brick through the window and steal it = more chance you will make a claim = greater insurance risk = bigger premium.

Body kit = more expensive to repair = bigger claim = bigger premium.

and so on

true true, you just saved a soul from utter humiliation when he drived up to a nightclub, however as for me im thinking of putting some peugeot 106 GTI alloys on my pug, make it look a little bit nicer but im not keen on having my insurance bumped up just because of a nicer set of wheels.

ah well im thinking on the lines of a new fiat 500 sport, it was on fifth gear last night and looks like one sexy little car, maybe on my gap year before going to uni i can find a cheap one and with full time work for that year maybe pay it off or atleast most of it before going to uni.

AND TOP GEAR IS BACK ON THIS WEEKEND!

Wow! I've just been quoted £1000 car insurance for a 2001 Vauxhall Corsa, i know they're not as good as the Fiesta, but if it's that much cheaper overall, I'm seriously tempted.

to be fair, until you're old enough to pull girls, it doesn't really matter what you drive . save the money on the insurance, definitely. parts and servicing can't vary that much?

Sound advice from Mike there I think. £1k-3k to insure a Corsa!!!! - Jeez, how's anyone supposed to afford that?!!!

I think you just need to get yourself a sensible cheap set of wheels and don't shunt it for a year or two then the premiums should start to come down.

When I look back, it cost a couple of hundred quid to insure a Panda or similar little car in early 90's - a frightening amount of money back then, so I had little choice but to go on as name driver on my mum's policy in order to drive anything!

Well, by adding my dad on there my premium came down a bit. But yes, it's a hell of alot of money. More than the cost of the car if i do buy it.

Oh well, providing i don't crash or anything naughty like that, it will eventually fall..

For a very cheap car, it would be worth looking at third-party only cover if you have the option. So long as you could afford to repair/replace your own car if need be - as always the question with insurance is "can you afford not to have it?"
