I can't offhand think of any logical reason why trade with US would be any easier than trade with UK? Both now "3rd party" countries as far as EU are concerned, surely - as is Australia, although I know there is a "framework agreement - but certainly no "free-trade" agreement between them and EU? |

TBH I dont think its about Brexit which occurred in June 2016. The consequences of a deal or no deal have been discussed during, at least, last year.
I feel totally unconceivable that in France nobody has been able to build up at least two scenari of how to manage with goods sent from the UK to France! We just are donner un bâton pour se faire battre! What a troop of pricks! As you, I buy from RPC on a regular basis with various success… Buuut, some over there know how to manage and escape from import taxes. I bought an aluminium rad' for a group2 Escort and another for my 951. No tax at all. Why? Because the invoice and label on the parcel specified "parts for radiator"… |

Richard, at the moment it turns out to be more complicated and probably more expensive. And nothing to do with Brexit itself. Only french customs. We are now used to deal with US and Australia, we know what kind of extra will applied.
I'm now bothered to have labour done on several engines/gearboxes and need some Avon tyres, the hassle comes from France and certainly not the UK! Show me anyone looking for "good reasons" and I'll be looking to a fool! |

Gerard do you use Mark Bailey Racing for your gearboxes? If you do and bring some over to him we can meet for lunch - we are in the same village!

Its no secret that we've better use UK suppliers for our race cars. The best are there, matter of fact. Have a look to Burton, Group4 or even PAF (a French operating form England) websites and you'll see the kind of mess we're facing to! Warnings, remainders, advices, unanswered questions this is all about OUR procedures. Not yours. Its seems the Brexit and its consequences have been the big surprise of the end of 2020. Serious?

Merci beaucoup Andy. The reason why we use Burton, well one of the reasons, is that they carry a huge catalog. The handling is good too, and the way they manage back orders is fair imo.
Yes there are many parts common to Escorts and Capris. And sometimes its possible to meet people we can have fun with about our differences, like Ric Wood talking about the side any steering wheel should be found! |

I'm just going off purchases I've made in Spa from a UK company and the VAT was 21%. I also bought something direct from Germany and had to pay their VAT and not the UK's. In other news it looks like we are close to a deal with NZ so their wine should be cheaper in the UK, it would also be nice if they included a free movement of population clause in it as well. |

You maybe right, Peter, not sure, it was a Gareth Lloyd I dealt with so maybe a family connection. Gareth was excellent and the quality of the goods supplied was far better than similar items supplied previously by Burton.

Yes Peter this is the same we used to buy genuine Minilites from. So easy to deal with. Phone call to check what they had from the shelf, dimensions and offset, confirmation of the shipping costs, Paypal and that's it.
@ Tim: strange your experience with Germans. I often buy from IL Motorsport, they add two lines at the invoice: one to remove German VAT, one four ours which is currently 20% for this type of goods. Last edited by Gerard C; 25 Jan 2021 at 19:09. |

Tim again, for you, today's fresh, picked from Grp4 Fab' website. If I'm not totally nuts, they belong to the EU, yes?
"From 1st January 2021 orders to UK Mainland shall not be charged Irish VAT, however there may be local duties & taxes to be paid locally to your delivery courier prior to delivery. Your local courier shall be in contact prior to delivery to arrange this." Good parts if you're building an Escort. |

Broadly speaking that's how it works when I import from Pakistan. DHL send me a bill for the VAT - and in that case duty because there's no trade deal - several days or weeks later.

Had a collection card from DHL yesterday advising that I need go to my local PO to collect some parts I had made in the UK.
Also telling me I have to pay for Customs holding,€6 plus a further €6.76 vat charge. Parts made came to 18£! Brexit, made for the easily lead. |

The gouging charge for processing (or even just P&P within a country) is always going to be independent of the value of the products. That doesn't make it any more satisfying of course but realistically it's pretty much no different, other than the opportunistic "customs holding fee" label, to how things operate anyway. DHL have to pay somehow for all the freighter aircraft they are operating! |

Nearly a couple of decades ago I had a paid for trip to a conference in Florida, an annual event run by a software outfit whose products I had been using for a while and where I had spent quite a bit of time offering assistance to other users via their forum.
I had worked out a way of undertaking some tricky data extraction task using obscure bit of logic and at the conference presented these options to the attendees. What I did not know until it happened was that the company had decided to inaugurate an award that year for non-employees who had been offering user community support in the spirit of another chap who had been especially inspiring but had unfortunately passed away the previous year. So there I was travelling light, returning via multiple flights and quick stay with a former colleague in Washington DC and suddenly I have a significantly sized and relatively heavy block pf laser engraved glass like material to lug around in addition to the conference material and some stuff provided by another of the presenters. The company kindly offered to ship the piece, well packaged (so a largish box bit some middle weight assessment) via Fedex (iirc) and being unfamiliar with such a thing declared a value based on the cost to them. Which put it over the Duty threshold at the time and resulted in contact from Fedex demanding payment. The value should have been Gift and £0 to be realistic since it had no intrinsic resale value. As I recall we had a 3 party discussion about how to sensibly deal with this and there was an eventual resolution that ultimately led to the package arriving. It took a while. Some parts of the world are very generous with samples and gifts. I guess one has to become familiar with the rules although at any process change point, like now and again in Summer when the EU -allegedly - will be catching up with their own legislation, one might expect greater attention simply because of the changes. Might be at least a year or two before things start to run more smoothly. Maybe not more cheaply though. Digital tax collection free at the point of collection as far a Govt. is concerned is far too tempting to manage with a light touch. |

Given that pre-Brexit the UK VAT would have been £3.60, I'm confused as to how your VAT should be so high - are German VAT rates really that extortionate? Googling seems to indicate that it is 19%..... |

I must admit to being so pleased to get the parts,I wasn't overly concerned about working out the vat. Only made the post to give an idea on what can be expected now when dealing with the Island. |
