So the wheels have fallen off at McLaren pretty early in the year.
Alonso is the only one to have used the Super Soft rubber, and still is a second off the TR Honda on the standard soft. |

Can still learn loads even at low temps. These cars are prototypes really. Besides there's nowhere else they could really test that wouldn't bring massive logistical issues with getting new parts etc.

Besides no-one gives a monkeys about times until the 2nd test. They've all got everything detuned massively at this stage. |

Times at the lunchtime break. Not that important after just a few hours but for interest..... Impressively Bottas and Danny Ric or Hulkenberg have yet to use anything other than medium compound tyres. Other like Raikkonen have gone one softer to the standard soft. 1 Ricciardo Red Bull 1m20.179s 2 Bottas Mercedes 1m20.349s 3 Raikkonen Ferrari 1m20.506s 4 Hulkenberg Renault 1m20.547s 5 Hartley Toro Rosso 1m22.371s 6 Stroll Williams 1m22.452s 7 Grosjean Haas 1m23.092s 8 Alonso McLaren 1m24.202s 9 Ericsson Sauber 1m25.417s 10 Mazepin Force India 1m25.628s |

Of course it’s incredibly early but can’t help but laugh that the “incredible” McLaren car failed and that the “nightmare” Honda engine did 72 trouble-free laps!

It wouldn't surprise me to see STR beating Mclaren this year. And it wouldn't surprise me to see Renault's reliability suffer with the very large Renault customer program that's underway. It seems a bit of a folly to take on so many teams.
I don't blame Mclaren for making the switcheroo mind you -- but I got a sinking feeling they could be caught out with that decision nevertheless. |

Hamilton not even in top 10?
I know, he’s not driving, but just shows how easy it is to interpret the results to suit your own viewpoint! Looking at the video of Alonso seems like a failure as suggested, rather than loose wheel. EDIT- according to McLaren it was loose wheel...... Is there any free live timing anywhere ? Last edited by Mike Bell; 26 Feb 2018 at 13:27. |

I think that that is just live journalistic coverage rather than live timing. This ( https://www.autosport.com/f1/live/27...t-day-one-2018 ) provides the coverage plus up to date fastest single laps by each car/driver. |

Looks to me like track is so cold that is a better compound choice. Seems most have decided it’s too cold......

Tyre compounds are meaningless in the temperature ranges in Spain at the moment. Last year the softer compounds were slower than the harder ones. They're just not designed to work in those conditions so times are totally irrelevant. All any of the teams want to do in the first couple of days is make sure everything works. The top 3 will be doing 1:16's by the end of the next test.
