When I raced the car I had I discovered much about these cars, the car suffered from one of the most distressing problems found in motor racing, it felt absolutely fantastic but was dreadfully slow. With an identical engine it was always at least one second a mile slower than our Modus, (in much the same way that the March 80A compares to a late spec RT1). I spoke to Paul Owens about this and he told me the update was done to have any chance of selling cars after Dereks death and that the brief was to use as much as possible of the previous car and that all changes had to be "bolt on".The main problem was that this made the resulting car very heavy, the narrow nose made the car slow in a straight line and that the rear suspension was a complete disaster. The rear end was an upgrade that took all of the previous car's good points, threw them away and replaced them with heavier, weaker and less stable components! Paul did add that the car they should have built was what Plygrange did for Jim Crawford on their B45 but that it simply would not have sold. I believe that it was Jim's success that lead to Brian Robinson (and others) to begin reworking their B48s to a similar (but sadly not as complete or as successful) spec. the most obvious external change was the retro fit of the B42ish nose which the factory produced to allow retention of the front rockers but used the full width nose and splitter. Having also owned Jim's B45 I can tell you that it was simple, very light (needed ballast to make the F2 weight) and simply brilliant to drive, to which I would say to young master Drifty that when he finally stops waffling and gets his and all his mates later F2 cars together for his eagerly awaited series that the B45 would make a more than competitive proposition! (But I've always really, really fancied a Maurer)

bruises will heel but the stab wounds will be with me forever- i know how Ceasar felt !
when i was a young man in 82 /83 i worked in a pub to earn money to go karting and the old farts would drink half a mild and bitter and it had to be in a jug not a straight glass - not something you hear today being asked for Ive never denied that you could not fit b42 body to b48 car it was more why? it was not a period mod more a later modification when the cars became clubman cars out of curiosity why did Robinson not make the 48 car into the esprit a sit did away with the poor GE body work and keep the 42 as a standard car that obviously worked As for Mr H buying a post 78 F2 race car i think that will be for my grand children to see and not in my lifetime ! I wanted a Maurer as i didnt want a march ( too common! ) but none where for sale so i bought another rare F2 car i had the option 3 years ago on a maurer but there was no spare space in my "museum" but i am still chasing the car as i now have "space" |

Drifty, apology accepted, and beer is much better in a straight glass anyway!!!
But, Robinson DID make his GT out of the B48, not the B42. |

Just that in thread no.254, you said "...why didn't he make his Esprit out of the 48, and keep the 42 as a single seater..." My point is this is exactly what he did!

Steve, can't you put those pics up on here, the cars at least look like B48s, tho' I'm fairly sure they're not...

Three B48s?
Quote:
We think this is a B47 with B48/B49 bits attached. I am currently trying to contact the driver! I believe this was the richard Brown car that had a very hard shunt at Prescott. This could be either a B47 or a B49. It was entered as a B48 and also as a B49. Run by Ken Snailham, the Whiteheads then Clive Wooster. This was always entered as a B48 - Stephen Lees is the driver. Over to you Dan. |

That white one, Stephen Lees, at least looks like a real B48. Though the pods are more like March 79B ones. Any history of this car Steve, an ex-Docking/Huub car maybe??
