The Beeb seem a bit more optimistic than the official news release: '"Our investigation has confirmed an issue with a pinion gear in a Merlin engine. With the precise cause of the problem known, each pinion gear is now being inspected to confirm it meets our exacting standards, with the BBMF and industry putting all of our efforts into getting these beautiful aircraft safely back in the air as soon as possible.' (source: https://www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/news/ind...12C1F5FFC2F90A ) Depending on how much needs to be dismantled to examine the other 3 engines on the Lanc it could take some time... |

I'm afraid you are completely wrong. It's "it's" not "its".

I believe so, but you have to bear in mind that the Beeb is wrong about absolutely everything these days & not to be trusted as a source of information!
What I meant was that specific engines are not dedicated to specific 'planes which may or may not explain why it has taken a while to get to the bottom of the problem. |

As much as I enjoy giving the BBC a good kicking from time to time, I seem to recall that it was actually speculation on these pages that brought up the matter of oil.

It would tie in with a pinion / gearbox problem, though......... |

So you do accept then Mike that the source of this problem is a matter of a pinion?

Interesting to note that the top 5 airports only have around half a dozen planes a year - OK, maybe that's a slight exaggeration; it's more like 6 a month - whilst the worst 5 are all very busy airports that have more than their fair share of the great unwashed.
It's like comparing apples and pears. Or claiming that three airports in Spain are much better than all the other Spanish airports, because there are no crowds. The only problem is that all three are closed; in fact, one, in Corvera near Murcia, has never even opened since it was completed some years ago because the Ministry in charge will not permit commercial aircraft to use the flight paths. This is because the airport was built in an area where there are three military airstrips, including one that is controlled by NATO for training specialised troops who are often practicing parachuting. |

Yes, I thought there was a bit of a theme in the results! Less planes, higher rating. I see Norwich got marked down for not having enough shopping opportunities inside the terminal, but if you've not got the footfall.......

I'm just watching the Isle of Man TT Classic on ITV4. Very Goodwood-esque in its mix of demos and races, attracting the top professionals as well as the weekend warriors. How about the fastest EVER 250cc lap of the track? 120mph. Sounds like development is rife in the historic bike world, too - they worked for that.

The Stateside TV coverage of the Isle of Man events never mentioned anything about fatalities.
