If my mobile phone network went down, I probably would not realise for a week or more by which time it would probably be up and running again.
Oh! Does this site count as social media? I need to know so that I can boast about it. |

To clarify my question E.B, if you type robert cayeux simca gordini or 1945 Paris 9 septembre, robert cayeux gordini bois de boulogne/ images may be you can see what kind of car my Dad's use to drive (sunday driver only). What a piece of kit!

My good lady is absolutely horrified at what passes for coffee in England. At a motorway services we encountered a place called Patisserie Valerie, which wasn't too bad, although the East European woman at the counter managed to get the coffee order wrong for both myself & the customer in front of me... We were a bit bemused by the croissants stuffed with tomatoes - wonder if Iain's tried that one? |

Taratata, the best are made in US followed by Spanish from what I've been told of course!
And you mean no spanking applies for adults too??? Too baaaaad … May be you should suggest that in the Goodwood section! |

I say, old chap! That's a bit below the belt, what! London, with it's 70 odd Michelin starred gaffs is not exactly a culinary outpost. We even allow a few Frenchie cooks to come over to learn their trade with our Bulldog top line chefs. |

Of course you got my poor joke. One of my favorite TV show, when can't sleep, is Gordon Ramsay's. We only have a pale copy here. I like to go to Salt and pepper not only for the food but rather the ambiance.

I read that the Bloodhound Land Speed Record attempt is being scrapped. When you look at the numbers required (£25 million) it’s perhaps not surprising.
Shame though. |

I remember watching Guy Martin in 'Our Guy in China', and he tried to Google, funnily enough, Tiananmen Square uprising.... he typed google.com, but the internet diverted to a Chinese search engine, and entering the same search gave a link to an account of the uprising that had minimal injuries or mention of any atrocities, no tanks etc etc..... basically a Chinese Govt PR press release very different to Western reports at the time. It was quite funny actually, because as he 'googled' (searched) on his lap top in his hotel room, using their wi-fi, there was a knock at the door.... Guy Martin nearly crapped himself. It was room service! I just tried to find it on youtube but no luck. Our Guy in China was three episodes, I think this was in Episode 2. For you cycling types in episode 3 he attempted to break the record for the fastest crossing of the vast Taklaman Desert - the 'desert of death' - on a bicycle. He is a bit of a cyclistt actually.... he in other shows (his 'Speed' series) rode to a new British absolute speed record of 112mph, drafting a racing truck. A short clip of that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wT0eJXtrwHg He also did 565 miles in 24 hours on a tandem at Goodwood, with his mate . I could only find a link to the full programme of that episode. 45 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA7C-Tzt4fI As mentioned those last two were on his 'Speed' series. I think they were actually a few years ago but have only just aired in Australia in the past few months. |

Thanks for that wasted 30 minutes! Every time I go onto SniffPetrol I end up reading loads more than I intended. Such as this...

Couldn't have happened to a better company! At least it probably means that my son's employment will be safe for the next year or so as he is employed by an outside "supplier" who are contracted to monitor and audit how O2's call handlers deal with O2's customers. The last two days should keep them busy for a long time! |

As you say a beautiful bit of kit! Stunning. And quite valuable now by all accounts. We dont get to see many cars like that down under. Just pictures or maybe die cast models. Thank you mon ami Gerard.

You're much welcome, ami E.B! Cherished images for me of course. What is amazing is that this Grand Prix featuring several grids took place in a large park surrounding Paris, le Bois de Boulogne, really few days after Libération.
Hence many genuine "barn finds"! I had been told about Tiananmen images suggesting a touristic place for some and a single student using his body to fight against the tanks for the rest of the world. Surprising to say the least. |

Utterly miserable day started off walking straight into a semi lake by the side of the road then finding out the shop I normally go to buy a drink was closed. Before that Id had a miserable bus commute with the driver thinking he was heading down the Mulsanne straight (not a bad place to imagine yourself but not on potholled alley). That was confounded by us doing bugger all in class apart from that all of us are goung to buckmore for a karting session.Better study on youtube now...

Apparently. That might explain the tomatoes? I sometimes wonder about the veracity of claimed 'historic' connections to modern iterations of a trading name. I mean, who can you trust when even the 57 varieties of Heinz turned out to be a number plucked from the air? |

Was it a name that the current incumbents bought up then? Because there was an accounting scandal regarding PV lately and the coverage implied the company was started by an entrepreneur a la Virgin/Branson. Or maybe I got it wrong. Quite possible.

The business was on the brink of collapse a couple of months ago, and saved.....
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45839392 I’ve never been in one! I ignore those sort of establishments in the UK. Better to wait until in France and can get the genuine article...... |

Genuine article in France, Mike, are you kidding me? Actually we're fighting hard for that (not Yellow Jackets).
What you get on your highways, from Valérie, Paulette, Mauricette or whoever wearing a plastic pleated skirt is a pale copy of what one thinks you could appreciate. John, Grant, this is modern marketing using virtual girls and names. I hope you both will admit that its not easy to adapt a genuinely semi artisanal good pastry to the average taste of a wild country! That's why in Britain home baking/cooking is well appreciated. As it deserves… Or as it "dessert"! |

As to food found on your highways, may be I'been unlucky till now but find its hard to find a convenient place. And having a trailer doesn't help to find a parking place.
I know Mike has a huge record of almost every route, a kind of Michelin guide for the wise trucker. So my question is: if you had to go from Paris to Stockport or Burton on Trent, what would be the best way and could you find… clean toilets? Please, consider the way back, of course !!!! |

Sorry, John, my poor English led me to read "Valérie saved by silicon injection" instead of "cash injection"! My bad…
Do you have a Dalloyau shop around your location? In case you have, I do recommend "macarons" (no pun intended). I can send you some for Christmas I you like it. |
