It only costs them about 100€ to make them! They are making several 1000% profit. That is a rip off then.

I don’t think you can join the FIA directly, but my sub for an MSA national A was just under £100. That only just covers the 100€ cost of the helmet. Although a lot of what they do is paperless now so there aren’t many overheads and they could sell their blazers.

DRS will not be deactivated when a yellow flag is shown, starting from the next round in France.

Good or bad move?

Well perhaps a bit more clarity over the way this will be imposed is required before it can be deemed good or bad?

The change was initially planned for Canada, and CW's original notes for the race were to disable DRS when yellow flags were shown in certain zones.

The question is - is the DRS still available under full course yellow?

If the DRS remains available to a driver only when they are in a green flag zone, then no problem exists?

What is the point of activating an overtaking aid in a no overtaking /yellow zone? Or am I reading it wrong? Maybe the DRS zones are activated in non yellow flag zones?

Apologies, this was already in place for Canada.

Pre Canada, if a local yellow was shown in a DRS zone, the DRS was deactivated for the entire track. Canada onwards, when a local yellow is out in a DRS zone, the DRS will still be active, for all DRS zones, including the effected yellow zone. The drivers still have to slow down in the yellow zone as previously, but DRS is available to them to use in that yellow zone if they wish, but must also prove that they did slow down/lift off.

I like the idea. But because the onus is on the driver, I can see this becoming an issue.

I'd agree with that (unless it immediately preceeds the incident obviously).

What's the point of having DRS active in the effected zone, if the driver has to slow down? As it is driver's can't overtake under yellow.

It's just to simplify an over-complex system. Rather than having the systems turning off and on and having to be managed by race control, you just leave it on. If someone uses it in a yellow, they'll get a drive through like they would making a pass.

F1 just over complicated it with the automated race control system. Series like WEC, and VLN manage slow zones just fine. VLN is filled to the brim with amateurs too, and they don't need managed as much as the FIA manages F1 drivers. This change is good because it simplifies the situation.

Wouldn't it just be easier to turn the whole system off during an FCY and back on when it's over?

Why would that be easier? It's obviously possible for sure, but surely the easiest and simplest option is to just not turn the system on or off, and allow the drivers to manage when they can and cannot use it?

WEC drivers manage multiple speed limiters due to slow zones. You wouldn't use the hybrid boosts during yellow. Lots of series have drivers manage systems without race control having to manage it for them. Why does race control have to control it? These are the best drivers in the world (apparently), so let them do it themselves and if they break the rules then slap them.

If Tracy Krohn can manage to not speed during slow zones in WEC, I'm pretty sure even Grosjean can manage not to press the DRS button at the wrong time. Although Ericson might press Grosjeans button for him when he isn't watching.

to my knowledge the automated system hasent caused any issues. so at this point, now that the system has been developed, isnt it simpler to keep it now?

but that said, i do like that more control will be back in the drivers' hands. that really should be their philosophy in all things imo.

another thought, on the back of the added DRS zone for Monty (will we see this done at more tracks?), the proposed (or now accepted?) 2019 rules for a larger rear wing thus stronger DRS effect, and more tweaking on how the DRS system is managed....is it a bit worrisome that they seem to be doubling down on DRS?
