George is just about to start making fuel tank for the Escort out of Ally. I will foam fill after its been welded. The homologation papers say 69 liters so we are making to this volume. Is this all ok???

Great excitement at Racewear.co.uk Towers today when the brand new 924 roll cage arrived. Massive indifference from the staff until they realised that it cost three times what the car did, at which news much RAOFLTAO!

Mike, you should only watch quality programs such as the 'X' factor, then you would appreciate TG. Have to tear nephew Tim away from the X factor, problem is he is an avid fan.

Thanks Peter and Mike for the phone call. We will stick to 70 liters as this will work out a nice size and fit in the boot well.Had a great chat with Robyn this afternoon looking forward to going to his place soon to collect bell housing.Getting there slowly but also having a lot of fun meeting new people and learning

Why do I not believe you... Iain, no problem, and reminds me need to check if having race tank in Gp1 car for HTP inspection is OK- when I get round to my Escort! I see App J in period had fuel capacity limits based on engine size, same as App K, but guess not a problem unless FIA event? 1.6 to 2.0 litres was 100 litres. |

Don't forget that the foam robs some of the volume - about 5% if memory serves. You're cutting it a bit fine if you've waited until now to get George started - the 360 is in April, don't forget...

Just so everyone knows what we're talking about. George is retired, but comes in to help Iain in the workshop, doing fabrication. Last year Iain put him in charge of organising the Christmas meal for the estate where the workshop is. The first thing George did was to spend a morning making an aluminium clipboard...

George who is 74 is a very keen Marshall and Kart enthusiast.Last year at the Stoke Row Festival of Speed he set up a little area with his karts and when Ross Brawn came in George made a B line straight towards Ross. I watched all this and thought "O KNOW"he is going to bore him silly. Turns out Mr Brawn was very interested in his historic kart as he had owned one a while back. Good old George.

Very interesting to see all these Escorts, not sure whether to go for standard or bubble arches on mine, can get a set 'locally' (in Aust!) in steel for $1100 I think, can't see f/glass being a good idea. The car needs at least off-side wing (to use UK parlance) anyway so it's a good excuse! Also front panel etc, I have square headlights and grille but I think round look better and probably work better.
Is there a reason to go either way? Arches & headlights that is. |

Headlights and front panels. Originally the oblong lamps were on the high spec road cars (incl TwinCam here) as more expensive. Then for RS and Mexico needed more light for rallying so went back to round for those models. Allowed them to fit the Cibie Biode twin reflector lamps that were the ultimate in those days. For that reason most people go for round as more synonymous with the sporting Escorts. Also the oblong lenses getting rare now, as are the grilles for either shape. If you have good lenses and grille (or want the TwinCam look) maybe stick to oblong. If not sell them on and go for the cheaper option? (But make sure you can find a good grille as well) |

I had a 1300GT with the rectangular lights and moved up to a standard road Mexico with the round lights. The difference in lighting was huge. I still recall the first impression of trying out main beam on the Mexico and wondering who had switched the sun back on at that time of night. Right - back to the topic in hand .... |

Sadly I only used the Mex for a few months over a winter before taking a job with a company car attached. So I never really got into the nitty gritty of the thing. But those lights were utterly wonderful. After a couple of decades of reasonable lights on boring (some more than boring) road cars I bought a VX Senator 24V. Awesome rapid leather lounge with many toys. Including adjustable headlights to go with the adjustable suspension. The trouble was that no matter where and how they were adjusted I would have been better off with a couple of candles and a Toc-H. The lack of light made 70 hazardous let alone trying for the top speed of at least double that. I found some higher output bullbs that helped a lot but they just didn't have the abilities of the Mex. (or any of the interevening period) lights despite being attached to a fast luxo-barge. 25 years age gap and luxury vs. budget sports but still some basic needs were lacking. I assume all German Autobahns were well lit when the Senator was conceived - so lack of lighting at over 160kph was of no matter to the commuters of the day. That all said Mike, given that only AVO aficionados (or their anoraks) would know about the special lighting set up, does that mean that such people can sometimes be slightly iffy? |

Just by simply fitting a couple of cheap relays on the back of the headlamps with a decent feed makes a hell of a difference on most of the older stuff. Just use the normal wires from the pathetic dip switch to operate them and see the results !
Most of my road vehicles have always used main and dip together |

I've got an article in an old mag with a customised ANglia fitted with rectangle headlamps (escort/capri type) wierd, although the bron paint, velour interior, wolfies etc stopped it sticking out quite so much
