So they can do more testing with their F1 engine?
First see than believe. |

And why design a car that's only good for one season?

Sorry 2018 and at the moment it is a research project involving HRD,HPD and Mclaren. Honda isn't happy what is happening in WTCC and they might move that money to LMP1 but want to share the costs with AHM and Mclaren.

Heard (read) this rumor on autosport forums too. That was months ago. I'd love for it to be true. McLaren and Honda back in sportscars. In 2017, engine tokens in f1 will be gone. Honda won't be supplying to anyone but Mac as well.

As they say, when one of the big three from Japan enters top level racing, the rest will soon follow. Would be a very welcome boost to the LMP1 grid after Nissan failure.

Are we really talking of the HPD subsidiary, and not actual Honda - as in HONDA. I doubt HPD would do anything unless McLaren funded everything... and even then, is HPD capable of producing factory beating hybrid packages?
As for HONDA, if right now they can barely handle that penny-project in WTCC, and just supply engines to one team in F1, how are they going to handle multi million LMP1 in addition to F1? And from McLaren's point of view it makes even less sense given that they have multiple times said they have no interest for Le Mans unless the top category has model reminiscent of road cars. So you'd think Honda to fund most of it and then want the project in the first place... Anyway, with just "rumors" to back it up without any sources again, I don't buy it. Glad to be proven wrong, but it's too much of a stretch. |

totally agree! HPD is an american engineering firm that produces the honda V6 indycar engine and with wirth research partnership was involved in ALMS/WEC/LMS/LM arx lmp1 and lmp2. Their current effort in sportscars is very limited to supply the 2.8 and 3.5 engine to few lmp2 teams that don't use the nissan vk45 (basically one oak ligier and MSR).
HPD hasn't any connection with honda's f1, wtcc, sgt and super formula programs, being mclaren, JAS and mugen the honda partners involved in that. And if this rumors will reveal true (really unlikely so far) surely engine will come from japan. |

Indeed!
Even the McLaren thread is more suitable place for this (fantasy?) rumor. |

Honda's new HRD building in the UK is almost done and is twice as large as the Mugen building next to it.
LMP1 would be a Mclaren/HRD project.A good way to test a F1 PU without breaking the rules. The HPD/Wirth LMP1 project(customer ARX-04 with the HR22) was taken from Wirth and moved to Woking about 2 years ago. Last edited by Makaze; 30 May 2016 at 15:19. |

But is that Toyota Racing Development or Triad Racing Development. (actually the latter is TRT these days)
The difference is Mercedes-AMG is now a subsidiary of Daimler AG that engineers OEM vehicles while M-TEC (Mugen) is a completely independent company from Honda that specializes in aftermarket Honda performance parts and Honda based race engines and often participates in Honda supported racing programs. They're more like Roush. HPD was originally responsible for assembling and maintaining Honda CART engines, which was why they had to go to Ilmor for the Indy V8 and Courage+Worth for the ARX-01, since they had minimal engineering capability of their own. They've since expanded quite a bit in that area to do their own engines and chassis but I don't think I'd put it at the level of TRD USA, which was fully involved in sports car, off road racing, and dealer accessories from the beginning and doesn't depend so much on the parent company's marketing budget. HPD never had the budget from Honda America (for obvious reasons) to do a factory Le Mans project, so they were always trying to sell a customer car-the ARX-04a presumably. There was suggestions it would be an LMP1-H customer car but considering how fundamentally terrible the ARX-04 has been so far that seems pretty crazy. If Honda greenlights a serious full blown top level international racing program it's always going to go back to Japan. I think we've heard a recurring Le Mans rumour for every F1 engine manufacturer but Mercedes because of the similarity of technology between the two formula, but my impression is that a closer look at the things reveals it to be nowhere near as simple to go from F1 to LMP1 as people might think. Those rumours coming true would probably depend on future rules easing the transition. |

No, not at TRD's level. Just saying that TRD USA for Toyota is the 'equivalent' of HPD for Honda. But definitely not as big. More like a tuning arm of Honda.
