Good calming words there. It was beginning to get hyped up just a little too much. A great car all the same, and a credit to your dad.

I knew Geoff Wood from his Mini days and was astounded when he came onto the grids with this advanced space framed Escort. None of us had really seen such a well fabricated space frame, although some of us did have semi-space frames and as privateers knew how financially sapping it was to develop any National SS car.

Thank you for your suggestion of an apology. The family was very upset at the 'deleted' comment. It was ill-informed & especially insensitive as sadly our Father is not with us any longer. As a family this find has been truly wonderful & also very emotional. We look forward to the day when we hear the car start up once again. It will bring back many memories of our childhoods at the race circuits. Such a shame Dad is not here to see it & also to help in its renovation.

Just looked again at this advert and it appears that the car was fitted with a Nicholson 2 litre BDG when raced by Phil Winter rather than the Hart 1840cc BDA engine that Geoff ran and which appears to be in the car now. Also notice that Phil's estate was selling a 'Foster' trailer. This was a little enterprise my brother and I had going in the mid/late '70s. I worked with a John Foster who had a sideline making horse boxes and agricultural trailers and I asked him to make a 4 wheel race car trailer for me which he did. We only made around 6 trailers and one was purchased by Phil. One went to the Bristol area and not sure where the others went. |

Sounds like the trailers would be collectors items now, then! If they survived....

I remember that he used any axles that he could get hold of from the local scrap yard and mine had one from a Mk 2 Consul complete with the hydraulic brakes and master cylinder. A mate of mine had his trailer stolen at The Ring back in the 60s and had to leave his Elan there. He drove back the next week with a borrowed trailer to recover it. Trailer stealing is nothing new ! |

Hi Folk's, a quick update on the escort.
I spoke to Peter at Spec-R today and whilst eager to move forward with the restoration, business commitment's have left little time over the last few month's to spend on the car. However, thing's are now moving forward and he hope's to give some update's in the near future ! GW |

Having been reading this for the last 2 days and must say what a great find!!
Do we have any news on the restoration so far as I see it has not been updated in a while? I for one cannot wait to hear this running again and hope that whoever is rebuilding the engine does it justice!! I am now following this with excitement. |

So it looks like there isn’t much going on with the rebuild at the moment and it seems to have stopped in its tracks!
It’s a reel shame when a peace of motor racing history gets found and there is great buzz around it initially but as the weeks and months go on it all goes very quiet. I was hoping that I would come back from the weekend a be met with a load of reply’s to my post on how the restoration is going? My worry is that this car will turn into one of these projects you see for sale on eBay that get stripped and put into boxes and never end up getting finished and bits get lost or damaged over the years!! A do hope that this will not be the case for this car. I understand It takes very deep pockets to restore something like this and really hope that spec-r can do it justice. Maybe if they cannot find the time or money as we know these things cost a fortune that they would really pass the vehicle on to someone who can do the car justice and restore it to its former glory. |

I think that what you have to bear in mind is that tasks like this can take a lot of time, and also a lot of money. Also allow for the fact that the new owner of the car also has a business to run, and more than likely other family issues to attend to (as we all do), meaning that restoring 'this old racing car' may not be their top priority.
They have found the car, let us all know that they have it, and have started on the restoration (also kindly keeping us informed of progress so far). I am sure that once there is more worth-while news to report, Pete will be back on here doing so. (I'd also like to note that I have no connection with the owner, all I know about this project is what I've read on here, I just know from experience that it's very easy as 'an outsider' to be more enthusiastic/less patient about these things than it is for those doing the work). |

I have now found some more information on Pete’s web site (Spec-R) regarding the car, so will be keeping an eye on that as well.
I hope Pete has some more updates soon on the car soon for us. Although, as he is a one man band I expect he is very busy and it will always be a balance between his business and the restoration. |

Please find a link below to Pete’s website that shows the car when found and a brief story.
Some lovely pictures of the chassis too. http://www.spec-r.co.uk/race-rally-r...4-13-38-detail |

Hi, just to bring you up to date, things are moving forward with the car now, the restoration continues to the high standard that my father would be happy with and Peter with his excellent skills and top rate contacts will strive for the perfection the car deserves. GW

That’s great news!!
Hopefully Peter will post some pictures up of how it is going, as I am sure everyone here needs some reassurance that some work is happening to it. I did hear through a racing colleague of mine that the engine is down Essex being sorted out. Hopefully the company doing it will be able to once stripped try and salvage as much of the original engine as possible. It’s going to need someone special to overhaul and set up the Lucas injection system. I would imagine that a lot of parts will have to bespoke made if parts are not available. I am down Peters way in a couple of months, so I may pop by and see his fabulous workshop , as I am told he always has some lovely cars being worked on and see how resto is all going. Fingers crossed for some more pics soon! Ps would be good to get some spare moulds of body once it’s done just in case anything should happen to it. |

No posts for a long time.
Did the rebuild stop or just taking a long time due to other work? |
