Wow - Never thought I'd say this, but if Audi have the only coupe on the grid, I'll be routing for them!

I don't see any reason to use a 5 cilnder engine. It will be longer than a 4 cilinder or a V6 and it produces more vibrations.

Cough! - its the new Knighty here......all this engine talk is tediously boring, can we please bring the subject back on track.......as a complete shot in the dark I think the new Audi R18 will be silver with red stripes and quite possibly driven by mcnish, pirro and kristensen ;-)........how am I doing????

You missed 2 vital points? It will have a round sticky black thing on each corner. Likely labelled Michelin.
And 4 more shiny round things, linked into a straight line, stuck on the front! As to the rest, what would I know... |

I just had a thought? Anyone got tank capacity figures for LPG, or Hydrogen?!?!?!

Good!
If it's relevant to the thread title, you can talk engines 24/7.........and please do. All I ask (why do I feel like I'm repeating myself?) is that you discuss Audi's choice of engine on this thread, Peugeot's choice of engine on the Peugeot 90X thread, more general future LMP engine discussion on the LMP Future Regs thread etc. If what you want to discuss doesn't fit any of the existing threads open a new one. Line drawn. |

This was a little light hearted banter? Specifically about Audi. What line??? We ain't crossed it! |

Well aware it was light banter, and I took it that way, it wasn't an issue. I was merely acknowledging Knighty's desire to talk engines, and encouraging him to do so. The line is hopefully drawn under his 'new Knighty' livery posts in a hope that we get the 'old Knighty' back to talking about what he talks about best........engines.

Oh please?! No!!!!!!!
My head may explode. Seriously, I think his non engine analysis is tight and succinct. As far as it goes! I still await an answer regarding 'alternative' fuels... |

LPG: refuelling is not fast or easy, the Ford BTCC LPG powered team normally do this at the back of the pit lane and the tank is not what I would term small. consider those races normally last for say 20 minutes only, then they can re-fuel it. Hydrogen - burning this stuff in an internal combusting engine is a fools game, its an incredibly inefficient way of using it, I have seen it done and to get the equivalent milage of a diesel engine you need to multiply the fuel tank size by about 5 times.........seen it done on a transit conversion for e research company who were going to sell conversions to the white van men - it was a joke with several massive cylinders slung under the chassis, realistically hydrogen is best purged through a fuel cell to generate electricity which drives a traction motor on the axle, much more efficient, lots of "fuel cell" companies now doing this.........but again - this aint no "long distance" race system ;-) |

Hydrogen right now is kind of a red herring. BMW's hydrogen 7 series has a 6 liter V12 that makes only 270bhp--the normal gasoline engine is far more poweriful. It seems that hydrogen is more than likely like ethanol--energy density isn't all that great. You have to burn a lot of it to make a lot of power, it seems. And to get the same range as gasoline, you'll take a big power hit.
I think that Dindo may've dropped some hints in that interveiw, but until December, we're all shooting in the dark, but I bet that some here have hit on what Audi will have with the R18. |

Oh yes. thus far I have worked out it will be a red thing, with 4 shiny things and 4 black things, an open Coupe body, with a petrol/diesel powered fuel cell stopping every 20 minutes for LPG.
Sounds exciting. Does it have a driver? |

Meaning Audi recognition of defeat... cut cost heavily... and pass to target the obsolete legacy motorization. After all with only 500Kj between breaking points hybrid tech is in no position to deliver a wining LMP1. And being 1º (first) in LMP2 perhaps can deliver more dividends than being 2º in LMP1(Audi 2010 luck is a think that only happens once or twice[more luck] in a decade- many times never happen). |

H2 has the highest energy per mass(kg) than any other fuel... also has the lowest density(occupies too much volume)...The problem with H2 is that the molecule is so small that it would escape from normal fuel tanks... similar things with LPG... H2 and LPG are naturally excluded from endurance(long races)... of topic, but... but future of H2 may pass to "water"( anyone can laugh how much they want from ignorance) and super efficient forms of electrolysis(google HHOi). Fuel cell are only around 30% efficient.. leaving modern diesel with the highest efficiency of all... I BET Audi will be diesel in 2011 or else they are in a retirement from race platform ... |

Manufactures will ONLY go to Lmp2 if they can win overall!, otherwise there is no PR in the victories. |
