Now, after Honda, it’s Renault who are embarrassing McLaren!
Next year it will probably be Mercedes letting them down and then in 2020 it will be Ferrari who are delivering unacceptable service. Still there will be some claiming McLaren have the “best car!” |

Anyone else think the Sauber livery looks even better with the green flo viz paint on it?

Unfortunately for McLaren they are having their problems out on track whereas other teams have had issues that have cost them hours as well but they're happening in the garage.
This time if it is spewing fluid and smoke from the engine as reported at trackside then it might not be their fault. |

Oil leak from the engine and they have to change it. Doubt we'll see McLaren back out until the last hour or so of the day.

didn’t they make similar but different mistakes with the honda? is misunderstanding the importance of the bit that actually makes it a car and not an ornament a new mclaren trait?

I'm clinging to the hope that McLaren are still driven by a genuine, overwhelming passion to be back at the very sharpest end of the grid. They've maybe gone for the optimum car design with minimal leeway for compromise.
I'd rather see that than selling out like the once great Williams team have. They appear to have settled for perpetual mediocracy........tragic. |

Neither have won a race since 2012. McLaren have scored 2 podiums since that time, Williams 15! Less mediocre than McLaren it would seem. |

Try running the stats from 1998 onwards and see what you get.

Williams have enjoyed a bit of a revival in the turbo era, even if it is not quite what it was. We will see how they go with two rookies this season

What’s the point of comparing from when they were the factory works Merc team? The first comparison is much more valid.
If the think about comparing internally to 1998, that helps explain why they appear so unrealistic in their expectation of themselves. |

McLaren do seem to have changed tack a bit now though. Back when they switched to Honda it was all about 2nd being the first of the losers and championships are all that count. Now they're talking openly about chasing podiums and wins and freely admitting that they can't win the championship with a Renault engine but not being down about it.
I'm just hoping for a repeat of 2011. They were nowhere all through testing with endless problems with the fantail exhaust yet got 2nd and 6th in Aus with JB going on to be the runner up in the WDC. |

Williams have had the only engine to win the World Championship since the start of the Hybrid era.
They were beaten by Force India in 2016 and 2017........impressive |

are we...? What's that based on, a few reliable laps in testing with an engine that's now in it's fourth year of development.

I fail to understand why McLaren, who've won the WDC on twelve occasions across four decades, are the butt of so much ridicule.
Alongside Ferrari, they are the absolute bed-rock of F1. |
