I wonder if anyone turned it up for one lap to set a time and then cruised for a good three lap average.

Interesting notes from today.
Audi look visibly a class above in the high speed corners. Porsche #14 bottoms out alot even at fairly low speeds, produces a nice spark show though. Toyota look v solid. |

FP3 pace is probably going to be more representative of actual qualifying and race pace. The fuel allocation and maximum fuel flow limits do not apply in FP so we are not even sure that Audi, Toyota and Porsche were running within the allowed limits. FP3 is probably going to be used as a rehearsal before qualifying practice.
So far the new LMP1 rules appear to ensure a nice spectacle. Looking forward to seeing the rest of it |

Unfortunately, after becoming very ill, I wasn't able to get up early enough to catch the live timing for this session. Luckily, FIA Alkamel Systems is there to save my life. http://fiawec.alkamelsystems.com/
Very interesting session it looks like! Audi looks to be back on top with some stellar pace, a few of the Toyota drivers have the closed the gap and benefited from Porsche sliding back down the totem pole. Marc Lieb is the fastest Porsche driver... that's a huge surprise to me. Also enormously impressed with Patrick Pilet's 1:58.981... fastest in GTE by a mile. Just as underwhelmed by Aston Martin's performance. |

Audi still slowest among factory LMP1s in a straight line. In fact, one of the Rebellion Lolas was faster than the #1 Audi in terms of top speed. But the Audis have the fastest sector times in FP2, even with the top speed deficit.

I was looking at that but assumed there's an error. Is it really possible that Porsche could be 25 kph faster than Toyota in a straight line, and 30 faster than Audi? That cannot be right...

I'm not sure but I think that beyond a low down force configuration, the batteries allow the 919 to accumulate more energy and deliver it at once.

I think the Toyotas will prosper on Sunday although Audi are doing what RBR have been doing in F1, they're the slowest in the straight parts but quickest in the twisty bits. I don't think we've seen ultimate pace from any of the LMP1s yet.
The Porsches did look really quick out of the corners. A great day, sunshine but with a bit of a chill. Much better weather than last year though. |

Porsche opted for 6Mj/lap electric, Audi opted for 2 (not sure about Toyota) so in that sense the Porsche has more electric energy to work with. I'm not sure anyone is really sure which of the three storage media (battery, flywheel or supercap) is best - that is one of the interesting variables of this season.

Well, let's see? The Audis still seem set to win.
The Porsches are surprisingly quiet, and quick. The Toyota seems to have hit most branches of the ugly tree as it fell... |

Remember when people complained about R18's look? Now it's by far the most beautiful of the factory prototypes, at least in my eyes.
The cars are getting uglier and uglier. (But I'm the last one who'd complain about it - what matters is performance, not look.) Last edited by Stahler; 18 Apr 2014 at 23:48. |

The R18 is definitely the prettiest but I actually like the Toyota too.
As long as we never return to the days of the R15, I'll be happy with how prototypes look. I appreciate that all 4 of these prototypes are unique. I could distinguish each one even if there were no liveries. |

I like the Toyotas look the most. The upright front end looks great. So does the low slender nose and those rear wing mounts. Not a fan of the Audi and Porsche duckbill look of the nose. Think the lights on the Toyota are ugly but none look great. Blue is my favorite color as well

I've always liked the r18, and in the above list of cars I think the Lola looks the best, but the Audi is a close second. The vertical front fenders don't' tickle my fancy so to speak....

The latest weather forecast here in the uk suggests its almost certain to be a wet race.
After looking at the GTE results for WEC what has happened to Aston Martin over the winter, they were no where yesterday. |
