No. Nothing like that. A genuine Grand Prix car in a genuine Grand Prix genuinely starting on a genuine front row. Not Indy at all.
Although it is from before 1950. |

And before anyone asks the Halford Special doesn't count.

His first Grand Prix, which happened to be in a self built car? or His first Grand Prix in a self built car, although he had raced in previous Grands Prix? |

The former, I think. I don't THINK he had any prior Grand Prix drives. Either way he was certainly the first driver to start a Grand Prix in a self-built car on the front row.

How about Marcel Renault in/on a Renault in the 1906 French GP.

Already had that. Marcel had been dead three years anyway but in 1906 there were no starting grids.
There is a big clue there, btw... |

Sorry, meant to say Louis Renault, now the grid, was it one formed by ballot or by qualifying times?

Ignore that previous flawed suggestion.
I think I've deciphered that you're talking about the 1922 French Grand Prix in Strasbourg, but I'm afraid I've had no joy in finding the name of the driver...yet. |

1906 French GP at Le Mans, Albert Clement in a Clement-Bayard. They all started on the front row , as they started at 30 second intervals.

No. There was no grid at that Grand Prix. There WAS one for the one I am thinking of.
This chap qualified for the front row by dint of being an early entry. They hadn't sussed out how else to line them up. Then again, when the gaps were measured in minutes rather than seconds, it didn't make much difference. |

Did the American Grand Prize of 1908 have a mass start? If so, is the answer Ralph de Palma?

They started at one-minute intervals. Anyhoo de Palma was in a Fiat.

Although Strasbourg was the first mass start GP I thought the front row was Nazzaro and Guinness so that does not work.

A gentleman named Franz Heim drove a Heim in the 1922 Italian GP
Might it be him? |

No.
Another clue: the cars were lined up in rows, but did they ALL leave at the same time? Or just row by row? |

Could it be Marcel Violet, I thought he made cycle cars rather than real grand prix cars.

I didn't count the Halford Special BTW cos it was an Aston Martin really, plus given the width of Brooklands and the fairly raggle-taggle start it's difficult to determine whether there really was a "row" as such, and if there was only 1 it couldn't be a "front" row. Having said that the one that's the answer pre-dates the 1926 Grand Prix de l'ACF. |
