I'm rather surprised about the NCAP comment though. What are their criteria for NOT testing? Anticipated sales volume? Or lack of ... |

Absolute quality, just spent an hour watching this. IMHO much better than anything on television these days (excepting Mock the Week).

Does anyone know whether a semi trailer would be classed the same as an ordinary trailer for licensing, length and weight purposes? Debate on another forum where a guy wants to pull a 7 meter, five and half ton motorhome type 5th wheel trailer hooked up to a big American pickup truck which appears to be around five tons GVW. It all looks illegal for use over here but we need to clarify if there are different rules for semis.

I'll give me a ring later and ask.
They were always classed as different before the EU licence laws came in. with HGV2 you could pull a drawbar trailer but you needed an HGV1 to drive an artic with semi. New rules with C and CE meant you can't pull a large trailer with a C licence (old hgv2) so need a CE to cover trailers and semis. Just wondered if I've answered my own question, Iain, maybe Tim did know after all |

I got my HGV when I was a retained fireman back in the 80's. I only had a class 3 in those days . Over the years I've been upgraded to drive anything

Make sure if you are applying for a new licence that you have got the same when it is returned, I notice that the powers that be have stopped me driving a seven and a half ton job, is this normal ?

Not complaining, as I have no wish to drive trucks anymore. Having got my HGV Class 1 in 1970 because of grandfathering rights, I sometimes found myself driving trucks more often than doing my proper job. We went through a period of having trucks laden trucks being stolen overnight, even out of secure lorry parks, and I went rushing around the country retrieving our nicked wagons. Except for one occasion when one of our drivers decided that a liquid lunch would be preferable to eating in a greasy spoon, and when he was poured out of the pub, he couldn't remember where he had parked the truck. I spent about 18 hours scouring West London looking for the blooming thing, it having been reported stolen by our inebriated driver, and I found it a couple of hundred yards from the pub that he had been in, with a windscreen covered in parking tickets. The police are probably still looking for the truck. |

Nice story, Mike!
Appears that at 70, when you have to renew every 3yrs and self certify that you are medically fit to do so, to keep 7.5 tonne category you have to take a medical and submit a report as well. Not sure they tell you that! For higher HGV licence categories, you would have been having annual medicals from age 65..... |

In 3 weeks time !!! I applied for my licence when I went to Spain at the beginning of December to make sure that I actually got it, it was waiting when I came back and I noticed it had the omission, not that it particularly bothers me as I don't really need to go out collecting scrap anymore

I was warned about this as several of my mates actually lost their motorcycle licence rights and had to take another test ! you are supposed to send your old licence with the application but I "misplaced" it. What made me smile regarding the motorcycle part is if you send your old licence you can't get it back and the only other way to prove you took a test is to show the old pink slip, of course we all kept that didn't we !!!! and I think that you had to send it in to get the full licence anyway ? |

Gordon, you do like doing things the hard way! I applied for my licence renewal last March, and did it online. They tell you there about losing the old classes if you do it online, and that you need to have the medical, etc if you need to retain them.
And applying online, they advise you that you only need to return the old licence once you receive the new one, and then send the old on to Swansea. I kept my old one until it expired, and I still have the old paper back-up that shows my old entitlement. Good news is that until 2019, I can still provisionally drive a road roller just in case someone drops a few lumps of the black stuff outside of the drive. |

Gordon, if you're still about - I'm looking at routes from Ricard circuit to the Algarve. Can go across S of F and enter Spain in NE corner, or go down Spanish coast to Valencia, and then cut across to Seville.
What are your thoughts on best for truck? I know the N route well and it is very hilly to start with.... |

Interesting isn't it that as far as I know 'driving licence ages' haven't changed much. Whereas successive Governments tell us that pensionable age needs to keep increasing as people are living longer and those in their 60s & 70s etc are medically 'younger' than in years gone by. The argument seems to work one way but not the other?
I should add of course that none of this yet applies to me as I'm a lot younger than most people on here. |
