Nice to see Nick Mason mentioning marshals in his column in Octane (page 43 Aug edition), also Martin Brundle mentioning the talk he gave for marshals in F1 Racing (page 54 July edition). All publicity is good publicity.

Damn, missed it and it's not on BBC iPlayer that I can find. Or is it in with the F1 coverage? I only tuned in for the start.

But isn't this an opportunity to pitch a new series to the Beeb?
Better than another detective series, more action, more excitement, less procedure, with a tinge of the western about it??
Sort of "insert favourite name , F1 Marshal!"

While the piece was nice and did draw attention to marshals, I'm not sure how good an idea of what we do it gave the viewer. Nothing was really explained (e.g. why would a marshal stand with their back to the race?). My Dads comment was he had no better idea of what we do after watching than he did before.

At least it's creating interest and if its boosting numbers good but with a little more time it could have been a lot better.

I thought DC made a good point actually, the adrenaline will be flowing, and that is going to have an effect on the way the driver behaves after their race has come to an abrupt end....I know club level drivers get very involved in some marshal's training days, but it would be great to get more feedback from drivers - we may feel we've dealt with an incident or flagged well, but do they see it in the same way, and could we have done something differently? It was a good piece of coverage, well done to whoever arranged it.

the piece was great. remeber people the bbc pre-race show is meant to be entertaining... not a documentary or fact file. Its aim was to show the exciting parts, opportunity, and involvement that marshals have in race meetings. They did this so well following Ted. I think any focus on flagging procedure would have made the piece rather dull and made many people who were watching it blank out for the remander of the clip. It is certainly something to grab and pull people in to find out more infomation.

For the best Marshals in the world you're all a bit slow I reckon

Not only are you guys slow but obviously don't read all the posts in a thread

To save having to work your way through the entire pre show off the BBC someone has kindly uploaded it onto YouTube and I put a link direct to it in post #3 of this thread.

I thought it was good, especially considering the time constraints. I was at Post 15 for my first ever meeting and Damon Hill was doing demo laps in the Williams. If that doesn't get you hooked, nothing will.

Only one individual came across badly, again.....

It probably wasn't perfect, but it's nice to be appreciated every once in a while.

I concur, usually, from personal experience, marshals only get coverage when they get it wrong, not when they get it right 99% of the time. The same goes with firefighters and other first responders. It's sad but true.

It was me! I wrote to the Producer of F1 when the BBC got F1 back and said that it would be nice to do something on marshals explaining the different disciplines that marshals undertake on the track. He called me that evening and we discussed how we could go about it. I also informed him that there were 350 British Marshals going to Abu Dhabi and he did a little on that with Martin B. He sent me an e-mail before the BGP telling me that Ted K was going to be on and thanking me for the suggestion in the first place. I have written to him thanking him for his coverage and to get that amount of tv air time during such an important race would have cost an absolute fortune. Glad the coverage paid off with lots of hits on the BMMC web site. I hope it attracts the kind of person who wants to marshal for the love of motorsport and have the resilience to 'stick it out'

Indeed, the piece caught the attention of the local Rock Radio breakfast show producer, who had Stephen Green on the show a few days later.
Russ kindly sent me the recording of the interview as i had missed it.
