Based heavily on a Mazda MZR roadcar block, but with no common parts. It has direct injection, and other features which only launched recently with Porsche. The turbo has carbon manifold, developed by Mazdaspeed and Honeywell. The overall goal was to beat the AER PO7 I4; its both lighter, smaller, more fuelefficient and more powerfull than the AER unit. Sizewise its smaller than the Zytek and Nicholson LMP2 engines.

It managed 8th fastest qualifying time on its debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring. It was 16 weeks since the project was started and the first engine had only run on the dyno during the first week in February. There was only time for 7 shakedown laps at Snetterton, before shipping of for Sebring.

Interestingly, Mazdaspeed stresses that there will be a customer engine programme for 2009, which probably is the overall driver of the programme, apart from branding. The engine itself is mounted as a stressed member in the Lola, but can be used with mountingpoints, as with the Lola gearbox.

From my point of view, it is more a toe in the water, than an outright customer program.

I know about the KSM car, saw it at Le Mans before some japanese chose to break it.. I was very amazed, as to the tinyness of the MZR-R engine..

It always helps to not destroy the car right before the big race though too...

The MZR-R doesn't have DI yet.

The intake on the picture is a brake intake, just as seen on the Charouz cars. It the most advanced Lola aero and they have been the fastest Lolas on track by far. The turbo intake would be on the hidden side of the (great looking) rendering. But a roof scoop certainly gives the rear wing a better flow.

That rendering was done using one of the introductory pics of the B06/10. What turbo/brake intake combination we'll see on the Mazda is yet to be seen.
