The weather for the first two years was surprisingly good. If I recall correctly - in 2014 it was unseasonably warm (jackets off) and last year still quite pleasant. They've been lucky though considering the time of year and the carparks (fields) have been relatively dry and firm. But it does take place in mid_March so one day.....
As to cost - yes not cheap but I'd rather pay that than attend an F1 race - and the mix of people attending tends to be 'mixed', all walks of life - even me! |

The entrance fee of £80+ represents nearly half the cost of my season ticket for the year at Brands, so much as I'd love to attend sadly I'll give it a miss. The entry list issue is just another nail... There are some of us who live in the real world where value for money is still a major consideration.

Understood and indeed it is expensive but as to value for money that is entirely subjective. John R put it well when he described this and the Le Mans Organisers as the best two of their kind. It follows that what you are paying for is something you don't get elsewhere. Whether that represents value for money is the individual's call. Sorry you won't be there, we could have continued the debate.
I plan to be at the Donington Festival So if you visit that come and say hello. |

I attended the 73rd MM last year and was mightily impressed with the grids, this year I'll make do with the Master's festival at Brands in May, always a favourite and so underrated from a spectators point of view and the HSCC publish an entry list pre race. Enjoy the weekend at Goodwood in March, May is usually slightly warmer.

Yes Masters was always good fun. Doesn't fit with my timing unfortunately.

Agreed just.
I think this meeting is targeted at a specific type of spectator and economic portfolio. And I am not one of those, let's put it like that. And I might add I would never want to be. |

I much prefer the informality of club racing and for that matter the nature of the racing itself. The competitors are nearly always approachable and only to pleased to chat in the paddock provided that you don't intrude at a frenzied moment! . More to the point it's the only uninhibited motor racing discipline where real racing takes place between competitors in self prepared and pretty much self funded cars. Club racing folk have a far greater respect on the circuit for their fellow combatants and have my respect for their unbridled passion and dedication. Having said that, I love the Goodwood Revival and wouldn't miss it for the world and for that matter I've travelled to a lot of prestigious events at home and abroad, Monaco included but for my money club racing including the likes of the HSCC and the 750MC is where it's at

I popped down for an hour to say a few hello's, indeed Peter and Tiff were there with the Rover, one of 2, some Capris, Dolomite and Escorts also. plenty of big bangers, a T70's and GT40's, 3 Cortinas,. all completely different, and a few F3 screamers, which was nice.
most time spent waiting as is the way with testing at Goodwood. I think I've seen enough so will save myself deveral hundred quid and stay at home. |

Some great cars at Goodwood today for testing, can't believe the tedium involved for the entrants waiting for track time. As usual the standard of car preparation is incredible although I was surprised at the lack of numbers testing. The Jordans look pretty quick in their GT40 and the SD1's, T70's and Ford saloons look superb on track. Good to put a face to a tententhers name as well, nice to make your acquaintance and good luck with the Rover.

From memory Goodwood testing is 'sessioned' and there also a limit of 7 cars on circuit at any time? Does restrict your overall track time....

I'm pretty sure there were no more than 5/6 on circuit at any given time today, just as well there weren't more cars testing than turned up! With a fuller grid you would have been lucky to get more than 3 stints, seems crazy but I guess it's down to noise restrictions? I noticed quite a number of competitors with secondary silencing to comply with the circuit limit.

Yes, pretty sure you're right about that. Noise limit is usually 105db, which is opposite to the MM itself, when cars must run unsilenced! (Or did last year...) I remember a historic Ferrari F1 at one of their test days year before last with an amazing and elaborate silencer set up fitted- just for that one day!

Tiff seemed please Peter - from his Twitter feed:
'Proper car! Got within half a second of the time I set for pole position last year and called it a day ...' |

Impressive, especially as he didn't want any times
Rover looked and sounded great, I still think I prefer Capri's though. I didn't quiz Mrs M on the subject, but lovely to see her too. |

Sorry I missed you, would liked to have met and had a chat particularly as I live very close to you along the coast. It's strange this forum exchanging conversation with persons that for the most part you've never met. Bumped into Delta and Alan Morgan a couple of times last year at Silverstone and Croft and I spoke to Brian A at Brands which is no great surprise since I spend most Sundays there through the summer but for the most part I have no idea of peoples identities. I'll make the effort to chat with more people in the paddocks this year

Goodwood events
An attempt to respond to a number of earlier threads
On the down side:- The Revival and Members Meetings are expensive – even more so if you need to travel from afar and book accommodation. Then again at the MM you get to rub shoulders and chat to motor sport legends like Ross Brawn, Jochen Mass, Andy Wallace, Jean-Pierre Jarier, Emanuele Pirro, etc and access is all areas. And costs are on a par I presume with the price of a seat for a 90 minute event at Old Trafford (if you can get one), - I’m not sure if you also get a chance to chat to Wayne Rooney at half time. The Revival is crowded and veers towards a fancy dress party at times (but you are not obliged to dress up and everybody seems to enjoy the motor sport) The MM is a real gamble with the weather. I too froze my nether regions off last year, but am coming prepared this year. I attended the F1 race back in April 1965. I wore a non-waterproof anorak, jeans and baseball boots (remember them?) which alas did not keep out the sleet and snow. Strangely I never see this authentic attire at the Revival. On the plus side:- The Revival and Members Meetings are world-wide renowned events – check out the glowing reports in the US publication Vintage Motor Sport. They attract enthusiasts from all over the world. A few years back there was a couple from Tasmania staying at my favourite local B & B (not telling where) who had the Revival on their must-do bucket list. They were not disappointed. Unlike the majority of tracks where historic racing takes place, enjoyment is not spoiled by having to peer through wire fencing or across large run-off areas. Watching the experts wrestling Shelby Cobras, V8 saloons and Group 7 sports cars through ‘No Name’ before and then through St Marys is awesome. And for the MM you get the chance for grid walks. And for those of a certain age, the opportunity to see pre-war Mercedes and Auto Unions, Shelby Daytona Coupes, races solely for Cobras, D-types etc, and this year Porsche 917s, Ferrari 512s, Lola T70 Mk 3s as well as the 1955 Silver Arrows is priceless. I have recently been to historic race meetings at Laguna Seca and Sears Point. These were really enjoyable, a somewhat different set of cars and atmosphere (and the weather was warm) but everyone I spoke to viewed the Goodwood events as being the pinnacle of historic racing. Finally I went to the Brands Hatch Formula Ford Festival last October – for the first time in 20 years. Yes, spectator entry costs were ridiculously cheap, the (small) crowd enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and there was some close racing. And the Sunday weather was great. But the cars all looked the same, and the spectator fencing (which I fully understand the need for) was obtrusive. Hopefully we will never get blasé about the amount of historic racing choice we can enjoy. At the end of the day of course you pays yer money and you takes yer choice |
