Nono...
At least now they won't bulldoze the joint, and they have to keep it in a decent condition. All we need to do now is lift the 76db limit on the joint!! |

Who would want to live around Calder Park anyway. It must be one of the coldest, most miserable places on earth when the wind is blowing.
I could never guess why they always ran the V8s there in the middle of winter. |

Obviously a lot of people DO want to live around that area - the new housing estates being built are fast encroaching on the track.
Why run the races in Winter? Because that's the only date/period AVESCO would give them. I wonder why..... |

I like how QR has it's round in July- that time this year, the ground was -10degC when we got to the track at 7am... then again, in March it's likely to be 43...

Calder under flight path
Calder may never be able to be used for residential use as it is under the flight path of a a proposed future runway at Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine), see your Melways map 3. It is not currently zoned for residential use.

I often thought that there was a hidden agender behind the date allocated to Calder. Why run a round at a track that has difficulties when it is wet due to the VHT that the drag racers use, in one of the coldest and wettest months in Melbourne. I might be wrong, but didn't Calder have issues about not having a wet weather license? Just strange.... |

It isn't just Calder - have you ever noticed that the track AVESCO and Cochrane have branded as 'old' or 'out of date' or in a similar vein get allocated dates that are virtually guaranteed to have bad weather?

Like Symmons Plains
If Bob does ever sell Calder Park (it's been rumoured many times for many years), i can only hope that whoever buys it wants to conduct motorsport there. With abit of money spent it has the potential to be a fantastic complex, not a bad road coarse, the oval, drags, pity it is underused On the main topic i found out that Colin Bond won a South Pacific Touring Car Championship in the early 70s. Where any of those races outside Australia? |

Does a little thing like a flight path stop people from building a house? Isn't the deal that people build a house next an airport, find out that it's noise, and won't stop until they et their houses insulated, and are given a lifetime supply of earplugs?
Maybe Bob could stick a nuclear reactor on his property to stop the houses from getting closer |

You're not supposed to build a Church or Chapel under a flight path either - Calder has an on-sitre Chapel after Bob was Re-born just after he found he had prostrate cancer...

It was quite an arguing point when the chapel was first built - somehow Bob managed to get a permit for it - but it had to do with the fact it was only being used on race weekends...

LOL... you can't build a church because of planes flying over, but a billion decibels from a field of Nascars is ok

I hate to bring this thread back from the dead, but...
I was just looking through my recently-acquired copy (it arrived this morning ) of 'Australian Touring Car Championship - 30 Fabulous Years'. Looking at the 1987 season, it mentions that Allan Grice won the 1986 South Pacific Touring Car Championship. There were four rounds, one was the AGP support race, the three others were in New Zealand in late November/early December. Grice won the first round, Charlie O'Brien won the second in a BMW 635, Graeme Crosby took the third (Nov. 30 at Manfield Park?) in a Commodore, and Grice took the last round in a private Nissan Skyline. I suppose the 1987 series would have followed the same format? |

Don't think so as 1987 saw the arrival of the World Touring Car Championship in Australia (Bathurst and Calder being rounds of it).

Then why promote the 1987 AGP touring car support race as Round 1 of the South Pacific Touring Car Championship if there weren't any other rounds? If the other three rounds were held in late November/early December in New Zealand and with only a handful of Australian drivers competing, it's not too surprising that it wasn't covered better over here.

I was reading the book 'The Peter Brock Story' by David Hassal, and in it it mentions that Brock won the 1971 South Pacific Touring Car Championship. All of the 4 rounds were in Australia that year.

How about an entry list for the 1987 AGP support race? Anyone?
