I think the chief problem with the LMP class is the same thing that every other racing series suffers from right now. Lack of primary sponsorship. Even NASCAR teams are struggling to find sponsorship and they get more TV time than any other form of racing in the US. The LMPs are the most expensive to campaign if not outright purchase of all the sports cars. If there is no competition in the class dur to lack of teams, why bother racing an LMP. Especially when a company like Champion, that sells high end sports cars, can campaign a car that at least looks like one they sell.
