Avon make good tires, Goodyear have done a great job in the past. It does not really matter except to the tyre companies that have all of their time invested in F1 already. Bridgstone would supply everyone with equal equipment don't you think? I just do not buy into the Bridgstone-Ferrari conspiracy.

Slightly off topic but:
One aspect that hasn't been given much discussion is the "marbles" that the current tyres create under normal wear, hence making for even less of a racing line. I'd like to see a tyre manufacturer come up with a compound that largely eliminates marbles.. and win the control tyre sweepstakes based on that enhancement .... |

I would just be happy to hear less moaning about tyres. The 2006 season will really make us realise that tyres have too much say in the result of a race.Already RedBull are saying that the difference between their performance and Ferrari's could all be down to the tyres.Excuses already.

some really good points here for either side and as yet have not made up my mind. so just a question here: i don't understand why people believe a control tire means less testing?
IMO, with a control tire, each team will have to test more and there will be no sharing of data between teams on the same tires(as we have seen during the current tire war). taking the control tire and matching it to the car will take on even more importance as it will now be up to each team to squeeze as much as possible out of the control tire (which will be the aim for every team). i the end it means more testing to find that correct balance which will be unique to every team. as far as your point kirk about the "marbles", i couldn't agree more. if they are going to move to a control tire i would like to see that being a long life tire. i dont think we would have seen Alonso take MS at 130R if the track was littered with marbles. iirc, he learnt his lesson about passing on the dirty side of the track at the tunnel exit at monaco last year. |

The control tyre will surely do that ... as all teams will have the same choices at hand, if they get it wrong, it is their own misjudgement. |

Surely just making the tyres wider but harder would reduce the "marbles" that plague the track surface.

If its really as simple as having a Control tyre then at the end of next season the Championshop table will be split into 2 halves, Bridgestone & Michelin. I doubt very much we will see this, rather I predict we'll get a mixed field with no clear winner on the tyre front.
I'm not in favour of a Control tyre, competition is good despite it's drawbacks which brings on echo's of the old Capitalism vs Socialism debate. However I do think they shouldn't not have gone as far as they have in bringing back Tyre changing Pit-stops. They should with the advent of the new potentialy longer Qualifying format, have allowed 1 set of Tyres for Qualifying and then allow teams to start the race with another set of fresh Tyres. Plus then have only 1 change of Tyres in the race. I don't wish to see teams changing tyres as much as 3 times in the race again, over a 2 hour race thats just ridiculous really. |
