Look in front of the windshield on the right side of the monocoque. |

It seems that whatever Audi wanted to use it for didn't matter much; only the #1 ran it and only during practice. For qualifying and the race, it was gone and replaced with a normal hatch. Possibly preparing for Bahrain, though with high temps at Bahrain only forecasted to be in the mid 70s F, it's not going to be much warmer than it was in China.
I wonder if the WEC schedules it's races around climate? Also, COTA and Sao Paulo were much warmer than it's supposed to be in Bahrain. Could Audi have been testing something for the '14 car? Sort of unlikely, since the intake was on the right side of the car, which on the R18 is the drivers' side. |

IMO that could be an air cooler for the cockpit, the closed cars has a mandatory maximun temperature.

Audi have run the same intake ducts on their cars in Bahrain in practice. I don't really understand why, considering that it's supposed to be only in the mid-70s for the start of the race and in most sessions. They'd probably have been more of a benefit at COTA.

I believe that there is probably more to just feeding air to the cockpit. The location of the air duct makes me think that they might actually feed air to the MGU located on the front axle (for cooling purposes ?) as the MGU sits right below where the air duct is located: (source: "Audi R18 Cutaway Display in Pictures", fourtitude.com) Last edited by MyNameIsNigel; 29 Nov 2013 at 08:20. |

Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but John Hindhaugh just said during the 6 hours of Bahrain that the new R18 will be unveiled on december 18th.

I heard that the 18th is supposed to be the Audi Sport press deal. Maybe it's not in Germany this year. Usually, it's been either at the Essen Auto Show or at/near an Audi corporate HQ. If they're testing then, the press conference could be possibly at Sebring, or, for all we know, Daytona Beach.
I don't know about the latter, since any version of the R18 isn't legal to be raced in TUSCC, but then again, Sebring isn't on the WEC schedule nor can any R18 variant really race there, either. But Audi do still see some (or, rather, a lot) of relevance to testing there. |

Audi will reportedly release some teaser of the R18's successor within a week--a report from an Audi Sport fan page mentions that it should happen 7-8 days after Bahrain.

Still didn't figure out why they put TK in the car first. Normally it would be Allan.

McNish talked about it in his debrief at Sportscar 365: Kristensen didn't start a race all year, and Duval didn't finish one all year.
