I feel like big time International racetracks deserve to be named after sporting legends.

Spritle, that doesn't change the fact that all the rest of the seating is still there in plain sight, which means it WILL impact your perceptions of the place, regardless of the fact that they're using the road course and limiting the useful oval seating.

Nah, if it was Mario it'd have to be like, THE MARIO ANDRETTI PALACE OF SPEED or something equally as ridiculous.

The Rio CART track was named after Emerson Fittipaldi. In fact Fittipaldi raced in the first event in his last year of racing.

I can't decide if Texans will like the name or not. "Circuit of the Americas... and the Republic of Texas".
It's the Mario Andretti Magnaflow Palace of Speed Stick. |

This is not the kind of PR that Tavo, Red and Bernie need. I see a backlash coming. I wonder how long it will be before the state of Texas is forced to back out of its committment to hand over $250M (over 10 years) to Bernie.
Texas Taxpayers Finance Formula One Auto Races as Schools Dismiss Teachers Bloomberg.com By Darrell Preston and Aaron Kuriloff - May 11, 2011 12:43 PM ET Texas, which may balance its budget by firing thousands of teachers, plans to commit $25 million in state funds to Formula One auto racing each year for a decade. Four years after motorsports’ most popular series left the U.S., Texas investors including Clear Channel Communications Inc. co-founder B.J. “Red” McCombs are building a 3.4-mile (5.5-kilometer) track to bring the event to Austin. Comptroller Susan Combs has agreed to pay $25 million for races through 2022, a subsidy questioned by critics and lawmakers as the state cuts costs to close an estimated $15 billion two-year deficit... |

Austin had a city council election on Saturday and Kathie Tovo, an underdog, anti-F1-track candidate, won a plurality (46%) of votes in her district, thus forcing a runoff election on June 18. Tovo's campaign Web site contains a Formula 1 Subsidy Fact Sheet that summarizes news reports about public funds that are destined for Bernie's pockets.
Tovo leads Shade as they head to runoff for Austin council seat statesman.com By Sarah Coppola May 15, 2011 Challenger Kathie Tovo surprised Austin City Council Member Randi Shade by taking a commanding lead in the Place 3 race Saturday night and nearly winning it outright. Tovo, a former Planning Commission member, received 46 percent of the vote to 33 percent for Shade, whose re-election looked like a lock a few months ago. The two will meet in a June 18 runoff... |

Is it destined to be another Donington, I wonder? Only they won't have anything to show for it afterwards.
Unfortunately this is what happens when you try to use public funding in a democratic area that doesn't really want F1. |
