Am I right in thinking that the early Renault test mule from the mid-70s had a W-format engine (can't remember how many cylinders)? An interesting idea.

Not the Alpine test car from 76, the laboritoire(Sic?) had the 1.5 litre v6 turbo, however it was rumoured Alpine built a w9 in the late 60s. I'l check up those details next time I'm near my books but I think thats basically it.

Slightly off topic, but.....

Jag (I think) once made a straight 12 for a hill climb car.

Damn thing ticked over at about 100rpm

Sounded awesome, you almost held your breath for the next ignition

Does anybody think that the recent Renault engines sound like a mosquito? Especially the 2002 engine....

Yeah, I never failed to notice the big difference in sound between the Renault engines and the rest...
While the others have a nice grunt, the Renault seems to sound like a souped up vacuum cleaner or something...
Even the 2-3 year old Cosworth in the Minardi sounded more powerful...

Must be a French thing...
