I should really dislike the man. Last time I saw him was at PCR at the World of Outlaws meeting.
I was with Brooke Tatnell's team, but not wearing any team apparel. I was in discussion with Brooke (about tyres), and stepped away for a few moments. When I got back, Brooke was talking with Peter. I came back and started talking to Brooke. I didn't realise I was interrupting an important McKay interview. Peter looked at me like I was something the dog had just coughed up. Pardon me for breathing, Mr McKay. I still like your writing. As an HSV owner of long-standing, you've referred to me as a Westie tradesman who doesn't know better about cars (like I should have discovered BMs and other more suitable vehicles by now. Poor me.) Sorry that those 2 litre things didn't take on here. You should have known that. Still, you keep writing and I'll keep reading - if only to disagree. |

Aarrgh8 (what ever that means) If Mckay reckons you a just a Westie Tradesman then thats what you are, he is a well respected guy in the industry and researches properly and wouldnt call you anything he didnt think fitted. I reckon if you interupted an interview with any notables then looking at you like he did was what you deserved. By the way you begged his pardon for breathing when really we all dont care if you stop although it does beg to ask the question which Westie Plumber will we call when the dunny blocks up.

Anyway, despite his wealth of epxerience and knowledge, Peter McKay does seem to harbour a personal dislike for the V8's, which he isn't afraid to remind us of on occasion (much the same as his sentiments on smoking). I say to each their own, and when I read what he has to say on the current tourers, I do keep his perceived prejudices in mind... just as when I read Kersher's, I tend to remind myself that his knowledge on this subject is finite. For mine, the age of truly great motoring journalism passed when Bill Tuckey gave up writing the Bathurst journals... while some may think that Ould Bill may have been a bit harsh or cynical when casting his rheumy eye upon the Winton end of the pit land, he called it (as he still does in his various industry related - and comparatively pedestrian - columns) as he saw it. His descriptions of the great deeds of the Titans of the day remain unsurpassed. Next time you read a Peter McKay backhander about the tourers, thank your lucky stars that it's not just another pro-AVESCO propaganda rant, attempting to forget and bury any evidence of any kind of halfway-good racing which may (but probably didn't if you believe what's written) have existed prior to 1993.... because there's far too much of that these days. |

Cav (whatever that means), if you want to get nasty, at least understand what people are posting before you start spitting. Maybe you should also read the previous posts in a thread to get a better idea of what we're on about, before getting bent out of shape. I did like your bit which said if Peter says I'm a Westie tradesman, then that's what I am. I'm not, but, if Peter says so...

Not that there's anything wrong with Westie tradesmen...

Thanks, Henry. there certainly is not. It was my reference to about three or four McKay articles/roadtests (which I enjoyed BTW, cavitation-in-head). In each article, Peter has made reference to HSV owners being blokes who make a nice earn from owning small businesses in Penrith and places like that, running tradesman-type businesses.

Well then, if only I was a bloke who makes a nice earn from owning a small business in Penrith and places like that, running a tradesman-type business... I couldn't afford an HSV (although it'd be a Ford in my shed.... naturally) in my wildest dreams.
Slightly OT, but I enjoy the other side of that particular elitist-sounding coin as reported by Murray Walker, during practice for the AMP 1000 in 1997... he ventured onto the Hill to vox pop some of the natives... what did they think of the two-litre spectacle? "Thy're a pack of chardonnay-drinking p%#fters, Murray". |

I think you missed the point Aarrgh8 You started your post with "I really should dislike the man" which was based on the fact that he looked at you funny. There would certainly not be many people liking each other in this world if we all followed that philosophy.

Oh dear. I don't dislike the man, and if I did, it wouldn't be because of the way he looked at me. He also wasn't 'interviewing' Brooke, he was just chatting.
It seems like we're both missing each other's points, so let's leave it while we're behind - and being nice and civil. |

The number of Times Peter has got it wrong is staggering. I do not have access at the moment to a software program that pulls up archived newspaper articles, but through the week I pull up some of his classic "bloopers" No wonder people have lost interest in him as racing jopurnalist.

If that's what you say Robert, then it must be so. (Sorry, cav). As a 10-tenths member, you can always come here for accurate reporting of motorsport. No-one ever gets it wrong here. We always check our sources and put our names with every piece of news. Alternatively, as a fellow Sydneysider, for the real inside goss on motorsport, you can always keep up to date with our top newspaper journalist on the subject, Ray Kershler.
I don't know about those 'people', but I still read Peter McKay, because "he's got jopurnality". Do you archive any of your bloopers, or aren't there any? |

Making mistakes is what playing around in here is all about... but thats the thing... thats playing around in here...
....whereas the 2 million people who pick up the SunHerald in a Sunday are forking over the cash to read factual based news stories. Its annoying when they get things wrong... but we all get things wrong at some stage... I am quite happy to admit when I am wrong... some others here do as well... while some others here miraculously disappear when they are proven incorrect... Its a similar argument about this journalist, as it is against Auto Action. Sometimes they should be doing a lot better than they seem to manage... at other times, they do a good job (but nobody will give begrudging credit on those occassions...) In case you think I am getting soft in my old age... in my view a specialist publication 100% dedicated and focused on a particular sport, should be held to a higher standard of information and content than a major circulation newspaper, where motorsport is not the primary reason for that publication's existence... Should we start up a thread about Mr Kershler? |

I've found some of Peter's 'bloopers'. One from mid-last year: "Ralf Schumacher has just signed a deal that will see him driving for Williams BMW at least until the end of 2006". If that's an example, I'd say that journalists can't be held responsible if everything the players tell them, and everything they do to validate a story leads them to a conclusion. They could spend their journal's income ascertaining that what they have gleaned is true, backing their stories with expensive legal opinions - and still be wrong (and late with the news). We can speak with the benefit of hindsight, but journalists are the ones who bring us the news in the first place.
Is Peter McKay a sloppy or lazy journalist, or renowned for his 'bloopers'? No, he's not. |

As has been stated on this thread, people might share different opinions to Peter, but who has lost interest in him as a racing journalist ?? |

D.R.T. 15 yrs ago Peter had a regular column in Wheels and a few other publications, that has now shrunk to a small column in the Sports pages of the Sunday Herald.
Peter Mckay seems to be two conflicting characters:The Good Peter was a very competent roadracer and still(Used to?) write some very well researched articles in the SMH on General Motoring. The Bad Peter is a journalist who is extremely derogatory to certain types of racing and the individuals involved. When Peter's predictions were way off the mark, he never apologised for being wrong or even admits he was wrong. He is no Murray Walker in that regard. His somewhat arrogant and often wrong assumptions have rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way. I prefer Peter stick to the factual reporting he is so good at doing and leave the vindicative and childish derogatory stuff to someone else. |

Mr Kershler is a staff writer for the Daily Telegraph in Sydney. He writes on all sorts of sports, boxing, NRL, motor racing etc....
... interestingly, Mr Kershler was the journo who broke the news first, publicly about Peter Brock's return to Bathurst in 2002 with the Team Brock outfit.... |
