The 850 Mini of Reg Ward was his own build, earlier than the Maguire cars, I think JM did source his body panels from Reg or possibly bought the moulds off him.

I do remember the 2 cylinder BDA, I think it was in a conventional Mini body originally.

Found another Mini ! Anyone know the history of this Chris Judge hillclimb car ?

You'll find John Maguire at any BTCC meeting. He is Peter Riches' right hand man in the scrutineering bay. Lovely bloke.

I think I may have an answer to this, I think Jeff Ward had a guest drive in the 'works' Maguire car normally driven by Tom, (now owned by Keith Scott).

Is anyone in touch with Jeff so he could confirm ?

Maybe I have the 850 mini of Bernstein! i bought it about 20 years ago from John Simpson and he told me that it was raced by Bernstein! at that time it was raced with a short stroke 8port 850cc engine!
I got these 3 b&w pics with the car, I don't know which year ! but I m sure that it is in Silverstone !
May be you can help me ! John Simpson said also that the car had a Maguire rear axle, the complete back panel is alloy, bonded and riveted and the roof is fiberglass , also the door skins are alloy , a really lightweight body shell full of holes ,also in the inner sills !

Hi,
The car you have is not a Maguire car, it certainly looks ex Bernstein but is likely to be the car he used prior to running the spaceframe Maguire car, (see post #59 in this thread).
His cars were always immaculate and very well engineered, he was also a very capable pilot.

Hi Steve,
I haven't heard from Barry for a few months, the last photo's he sent me were of the chassis being panelled with ally.

I will email him and see if he has a progress report for me.

Regards,
Ron.

Driftwood.....can you please PM me.

I have the Roberts 850 Chrade spaceframe. I would like to know what you remember about Gamble & Roberts. (sounds like a toothpaste make....)

As far as I can work out, they were racing partners. Initially with a steel shell Imp, which probably ran a 998, and then when they got the spaceframe running an 850. Chris drove the spaceframe.

I reckon Chrade = CHRis / ADE-rian

According to my notes it was Baby B7 !! That's a lot of babies.

I am now wondering what happened to John Flack's Maguire car ?

Excuse my ignorance, but what did you run in Donington GT's ?
I have some photo's of Don GT's circa '82/'83.

Have only got a photo of David Smith's Imp from that period.

I'm not sure who built that one ? I know it had got a 1300 BDA in it.

My brother raced with David in '76 and '77 in Special saloon conventional Minis.

John Maguire

Back on the Maguire theme, I thought I would post another Maguire run car, that of my brother Dave Carvell, this time a Metro Challenge car from 1984.

Although not a brilliant season they did get some good results, winning a few times and got a one/two with Vic Covey in the sister car at Thruxton.

Dave was also in line for winning the European Championship that year, leading by miles at the final round at Spa when the normally reliable Longman engine 'let go' in the biggest possible way with just over a lap to go !

I have also added a poster which was circulated in the paddock by one of the Canon team members

Welcome back Driftwood

My wife says common sense does'nt exist in men when anything with wheels is involved, so why don't they understand when we do something stupid ? (Based on experience)

Maguire Minis

Hi guys
A bit more info on John Maguire space frames....i had a quick look and found no mention of a Bernie Saunders (Used to do a lot of development work with David Vizard) in this thread so... who ran a yellow Maguire from the Cotswold's, Based workshop near Stow-on-the-Wold, Huntsmans Quarries, we took all the measurements from Bernie`s car, with Johns permission and built the main frame myself. Bought all the F/G panels & Front/rear coil springs from John, this was at the old workshop in Stony some thing Rd in Coventry, Roof, doors, front, rear panels boot ect..and got it all in and on a mini van, and back to Cheltenham in one go!!
Ran the car at Prescott Hill climb Champs and local sprints...in the 80`s Charles Barter, Nick Man, John Meredith were doing there thing at this time, I think the first outing was Weston Speed Trials and i striped 1st gear off the line, oh well.
The car was in a light Blue for the first year, sponsor was Cotswold Plumbing.
The next year the car was black with a red waste line.
This car was then sold to some one from up north. I only have one picture of the car, that is just as i sold it sat on its trailer...i`l do a scan and post asp.
Also in my neck of the woods (Cheltenham) was Dave Harris who ran an Original John Maguire Car in Hill Climbs and sprints and i seem to remember it was a two car team..perhaps a Davrian Imp as well, Sponsor was Royalist Hotel Stow on the Wold (Paul Prancard) Dave wrote this car off at the isle of man Sprint....he hit a wall at Creg ne bar (SP) i bought some spares from this car.
If i remember any thing else i`ll post but i`m getting old so i only remember the good bits.

Maguire Metro

Don't think it's been mentioned on this thread yet but there were at least a couple of Maguire Metros. Bill Richards had two I think and still owns one which runs with a BDA in it. I owned Bill's first car (I think ?) which I raced in the late 90's before selling on to buy a single seater. Wished I had kept in now ! I have a magazine article somewhere with a pic of both Maguire Metros together. I'll see if I can dig it out.

Belated welcome to airhorns bmws r us and Keith, thanks for the informative posts.

Thanks also for to megapin for your latest post.

I think the Metro's have been mentioned back in the thread (try the search option if you can) but any more info you have can only be a good thing. I remember the Bill Richards car from Wendy Wools and Viv Wallace also ran a smaller engined version around the same time IIRC, was that also a Maguire shell?

I remember Bernie Saunders, we used to go and see him at the quarry.

He was doing hillclimbs and sprints with a conventional mini in the same yellow colour scheme as his Maguire car, sharing it with his (brother ?)

The Maguire car was circuit raced for Bernie by Malcolm Allen and very quick it was too, having an 8 port engine on fuel injection.

He had got the upper hand of our Maguire car at Donington one day but the throttle linkage broke and my brother went on to win !

Malcolm had a huge accident in it, I think it was at Combe and it caught fire, he was quite badly burned but both he and the car were repaired to fight another day.

I have attached a poor quality photo of Bernies car at Combe.

Do you know if Bernie is still around the area ?
