Bob,
Frank Gardner raced an ex-KarKraft Boss Mustang in the British saloon Car Champ in 1970, and Dennis leech also in 1970-72 in his Boss 302 (But was 7.1 litre engined by 1972) Martin Birrane drove one in 1971-73, but alas, none of them won the championship! (But Gardner won the over 1600 or 2000cc class in 1970) And the only photos I have are on transparency, which I can't scan, so sorry about that! Hope someone else has some though. Absoloutely marvellous stuff on here guys! Wish i was around at the time to see them racing!
My earliest recollection of highly modified saloons is special saloons, some bigger engined cars naturally raced in the upper capacity classes there also, like Bob Trotters V8 Escort, Terry Nicholls GAV6 Capri etc... I think SCV8 could recreate a little bit of this sort of spectacle with the power they'll be putting out! |

Seaman, interesting that it was Jeff Ward in this Capri, at that time he was mainly in 1-litre Imps, and very quick he was too.
The colour pictures Andrew posted in this thread came from a set of Top Trump cards, that came out in about 1976. As well as the Supersaloons the set had various Gp6 Sportscars, some Interserie and CanAm as well I think. The white Skoda lower down in the thread is the Derek McMahon Racing car, driven in that year (1975) by Alec Poole. I think it was built for Chris Meek the year before, and powered by a 2-litre BDG. It was the first of the Skoda clones, and went like lightning. The yellow one, with a 5-litre Chevy was John Turner's, then followed many others! The Turner one later went to Arthur Collier, not sure who after. |

Thats correct, the Skoda was built by a company called SpecFab C+S who built a specisl tub using Rondel F2 suspension/eng.Swindon BDG and box.Went really well in Alecs talented hands (69 Brit.saloon champ.)I believe it came 2nd in the championship that year

I have just bought the remains of Mick Hill's old V8 Beetle. Can anyone help with photos of the car with its bodywork removed?

Hi Keith. Try Ted Walker here on ten-tenths. Mick might have some. I can ask him for you?

Thanks for the images guys - I started attending races in '79 aged 5, and these cars still stick in my memory. I remember the Beetle particularly clearly, and a white BMW M1 in Coopers Motors colours stands out. Jeff Wilson?
Would be great to see these classics running again at HSCC meetings, now they are 25 or so years old. |

Andrew, Most grateful if you could contact Mick Hill. The chassis has been converted to push rod front suspension and I need to do a bit of unraveling. How do I get hold of Ted Walker?

Mick Hill - will do.
Ted is a member here. If you look through the historic forum you will see his name or you can search for him on the 'member list' on the tool bar above and send him an e-mail or private message. |

Keith - Mick is away cruising the pacific on the QE2 at the moment (alright for some!) so I spoke to his great pal Mike Bennion. Mike told me that he and Mick went down to Kent to buy a Trojan F5000 car which was used for the Beetle. The front suspension would have been unchanged. I am assuming it would be a T101?
When Mick returns, Mike will ask if he has any shots of it and said that Mick would be most interested in discussing it with you anyway. I have also e-mailed him for his return. |

It would be nice to see the grid re-created again but this is one branch of historic motorsport lost forever. With the resurgence of historic racing in the early eighties a lot of these cars, in particular Skodas reverted to their former lives - Chevron B19/23 Ian Richardsons Corvair now a Mclaren M8 again? The DFVW of Colin Hawker was built on the chassis of Gordon Murry's Duckhams special which Alain De Cadenet did Le Mans in 1973. Where is this now?
I remember a comment from an Autosport journalist in'75 - Baby Bertha was a racing car made into a saloon, the rest were saloons made into racers! |

The Duckhams Special is rebuilt again. It was on show at the 'Autosports' show a couple of years ago.

Thanks for that info. However what about the others mentioned. The Corvair was potentially the best of the rest always entered but a rare sight come race day.
I hope Keith Norris keeps us posted with progres on the Beetle. And just to be picky no mention of Tony Sugden who, despite advancing years is still competitive. Well done sir! |

Tony has been racing so long - I remember in school, a project for 'O' level art was to paint some trees. I did, but I painted trees at Mallory with Tony's special saloon Escort in the foreground! Always in trouble with the tutor
for drawing or painting cars and nothing else. Must have been 1975 I guess. |
