Regarding Mike Newman and Birmingham, look at the video from about 4:05 and look for the top left hand of the screen:
http://www.motorsportmad.com/view/62...reet-race-1989 You have 1. Tim Harvey 2. Andy Rouse 3. Robb Gravett 4. Laurence Bristow 5. Chris Hodgetts 6. Sean Walker 7. Guy Edwards and then a gab before a black Sierra, presumably Mike Newman, seems to overshoot the corner and getting nastily close to the armco, leaving room for the white Sierras of Jerry Mahony and Gerrit van Kouwen to go by. Perhaps VIVA GT can fill in the details of Newman's faith? Autosport seems to have reported the qualifying times and subsequent qualifying positions rather than grid positions. From what I can see the grid positions should be something like this:
As can be seen there's some questinable times on the list and indeed some missing times too. All in all it seems as if 33 drivers turned up for the Birmingham race. This is as far as I can work the grid out. As the top-5 in each class likely got an automatic start, the rest of the presumable 28 car grid determined by overall qualifying times except that no class could be larger than 40 % of the 28 cars = maximum of 11 cars from one class. This would explain why Graham Goode, Karl Jones, Mike O'Brien and Nick May in the Maserati was non-qualifiers in class A. Alan Minshaw was the only non-qualifier in class B, the bit about a blown engine in his class C Golf being mentioned here. Mike Jordan should have been on the grid but his gearbox failed just before start which moved Graham Goode to the grid. But if the 40 % rule would have applied this position should have gone to Alan Minshaw, as class B would then have been up to 8 cars!? Tony Dolley is mentioned as the final non-qualifier in the qualifying report, but think I have spotted all three AE82 Corollas in the race. Jesper |

Round 12 of 13 of the 1989 Esso RAC British Touring Car Championship held on Sunday September 17th 1989 over 20 laps of the 2.500 miles/4.020 kms Donington Park Grand Prix circuit.
Qualifying criteria for this weekend seems to have been to qualify within 110 % of the fastest time in class. Qualifying had been affected by partial wet conditions jumbling the regular order. Robb Gravett still enjoyed pole and was away in the lead only to be reeled in by a fast starting Tim Harvey from fifth on the grid. Tim Harvey went past at the Melbourne Hairpin with Andy Rouse trying to follow through but was rejected an soon started to drop substantionly with a wrong set-up to finish third. Up front Gravett retook the lead for a brief moment on lap 11 only to run wide letting Tim Harvey to win. Gravett once again plagued by the brake problems from Birmingham was second. Andy Rouse was a long way behind in third followed closely by Guy Edwards substitute David Sears in the second Kaliber car. The Graham Goode threesome had another good race, with Sean Walker carving his way from 17th on the grid to fifth at the flag ahead of Graham Goode and Mike Newman going backwards after starting second. Karl Jones finished in eigth from Mike Smith in turbo troubles, Laurence Bristow with a spin and a few collisions in the bag, and a misfiring Chris Hodgetts in 11th. Dave Brodie had qualified an excellent forth but pitted early on with turbo wastegate actuator problem, to reappear but now lost fifth gear. Presumably he finished but was not classified. Graham Hathaway, having switched from Avon to Dunlop tyres for this event, went out late in the race with turbo waste gate problems, while Jerry Mahony and Mike O'Brien failed with engine troubles too. Tomas Mezera raced the JQF/Fina car in place of Gerrit van Kouwen, who had called in the lawyers, had a terrible time being hit by Laurence Bristow in the early laps and retiring with brake issues. Vic Lee turned few laps in qualifying and was a non-qualifier in the Maserati. Class B was another Prodrive triumf and Frank Sytner showcase as he now and then waved James Weaver ahead eventually finishing second to the champion elect. Ian Forrest would take another fine third ahead of a pit-starting Godfrey Hall. John Cleland and the Vauxhalls were dominant in class C although Jeremy Rossiter saw the tail lights of John Morris' Golf, before the Volkswagen was launched into several rolls after hitting a curb too hard. Ray Armes won class D with 10 seconds to spare despite a cracked exhaust with Geoff Kimber-Smith next up. Phil Dowsett's Corolla reported missing as it was being prepared for Macao. Additional news from 5 October 1989 Chris Hodgetts has been released from his Brooklyn contract and will race the JQF/Fina RS500 at the Silverstone finale. Chris has already been testing the car with David Brabham also doing laps in the car. Graham Hathaway has bought the ex-Mark Rennison Ford RS200E rallycross car off DSRM without definite plans for 1990, except the BTCC will not be considered! Andy Rouse and Robb Gravett racing at Bathurst. Rouse for Peter Brock, retiring after hub problems, while Gravett finishes eigth with fellow Brit Jeff Allam in the second Dick Johnson car. Dick and co-driver John Bowe leading from start to finish winning. Jesper Last edited by Jesper OH; 29 Jan 2010 at 11:45. Reason: News bits from the next Autosport issue added. |

As we know from the 1990 BTCC and RS500 threads, he also bought an ex-Trakstar Sierra early in the 1990 season, sharing it with Mike Smith as a Trakstar entry, then running it as a GHR entry for a fair part of the season. He went on to use the same car in Malaysia in the early 90's, at the same time Graham Goode was racing there. Hathaway's second Sierra retained the basic red/white Trakstar colours. Don't remember if we ever established the history of his original yellow car in the RS500 thread? |

Round 13 of 13 of the 1989 Esso RAC British Touring Car Championship held on Sunday October 8th 1989 over 15 laps of the 4,778 kms Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit.
For the second race in succession wet conditions influenced qualifying. This time though it never got totally dry and Karl Jones scored his only BTCC pole – and infamously was missing from the Autosport frontcover picture showing just about every other RS500 in the field that day! From third on the grid Robb Gravett moved into an immediate lead from Karl Jones who lost to Tim Harvey and then Andy Rouse by Becketts. Of the front three though it was soon apparent that Rouse was in command dragging Harvey with him to lead from Gravett which lasted untill the midway point. By then serious lappery of the slower cars had begun costing both the leading drivers a bit of momentum. Gravett took second and started actacking Rouse for the lead making a decisive move on lap 12 of the 15 lapper. The Trakstar man outbraked the Kaliber car going down the inside of the left hand part of the Bridge chikane only to be hit by Rouse on the right hand part. Both drivers blaimed the other for the contact made. It moved Andy Rouse into a relative secure first and eventual victory while Gravett had to drag his car out of a half spin. This gave Tim Harvey the opportunity to move up to second and with Gravett in tow that was how they finished. Laurence Bristow was a lonely fourth while Chris Hodgetts, despite flatspotted front tyres from lap 1, brought the JQF/Fina car an excellent fifth. The reason for the flatspot was a dice for first lap positions that saw Karl Jones going a bit wide into Bridge and then Laurence Bristow hitting Graham Goode from behind. Goode spun and faced the remaining pack to be hit frontally by Dave Brodie – two top Sierras already gone. Even before this Guy Edwards was close to bring that tally to three as he slid off the circuit at Maggotts but held it to finish an eventual sixth. Mike Smith was seventh lacking grip while Sean Walker stole eights on the final lap from Karl Jones who suffered a broken damper. A new class record for fastest lap still only yielded one bonus point for James Weaver to add to his nine for class B victory and loosing out to John Cleland in the championship by one point. Frank Sytner started the race playing with the privateer cars before slotting in behind Weaver. Ian Forrest again looked good for a third but went off in first lap fluids left from the Sierra melee and flatspotted a tyre. A pitstop put paid to any top result leaving third to Godfrey Hall. John Cleland won his 11th class C victory and took the championship with Jeremy Rossiter for once taking second in class as Louise Aitken-Walker retired. Ray Armes once again took class D from Tony Crudgington. The Terry Drury Racing team was back up to three cars at Silverstone. Mike O'Brien finished 12th beaten by Weaver and Sytner, while results of the other two cars are unknown. Jon Dooley with an Alfa Romeo sticker on the front and Andrew Hepworth in the other running Whale Club of the World stickers on his. After the race Andy Rouse protested the two Trakstar Sierra of Robb Gravett on 16 points. Rouse's version of the protest was to get an idea of how to build his own cars for 1990, while the Trakstar were disapointed as they had already volunteerily had their cars scrutineered on the Tuesday before the race. Race day driving behaviour was another disapointment for the Trakstar twin. The car was declared legal. 19 October 1989 BBC will likely continue their TV transmission in 1990. 26 October 1989 Andy Rouse's has had his appeal from his round 7 (and 8) disqualification turned down, only to appeal once more. A decision likely to be taken in January 1990. 9 November 1989 Andy Rouse rumoured to be heading for Germany and the DTM running Mercedes-Benzs. Alan Barnes of Nordic Supply is to head sales of Dick Johnson Racing spare parts in the UK. James Weaver unable to collect a BRDC Silver Star as he was in hospital for operation of a foot. JQF Engineering in receivership as of 1 November 1989. Fina already withdrawn as sponsor and no comments available from team boss Jon Fisher. Robb Gravett to take part in the Fuji Intertec 500 with a Swedish Jan-Åke Söderqvist RS500. 16 November 1989 Jerry Mahony craks a shoulder blade in a winter series kart race also contested among other BTCC drivers Tim Harvey. Mahony says that his 1990 BTCC plans definitively won't include a Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth. As a further note his reported new for 1989 Dick Johnson car mentioned around midyear never materialised as far as I can track. James Weaver has signed with Rob Dyson for next years IMSA series. No comments on any future BTCC participation. 30 November 1989 Reports of the Macau Guia race going to Tim Harvey after early leader Andy Rouse brakes a damper on his way to second. No mention of Phil Dowsett or any of the other two possible British Corolla AE82s. A Jonathan Pencock (GB) is mentioned as not qualified. 21/28 December 1989 It's definite that class C and D won't be contesting the 1990 BTCC. The 1989 BTCC review. Looking at the top-37 point standings not only Andy Rouse has his points-on-the-road listed but so too has Dave Brodie – 13 points in fact causing further revisions to any other point scores from Brodie's round 3 victory at Thruxton. 4 January 1990 £120,000 was the income from the assets auctioned off of the former JQF team. 11 January 1990 Andy Rouse declared class A champion of 1989 on Monday 8 January 1990. Material added to the turbocharger for round 7 at Silverstone was a repair job and not a modification. No mention of the Dave Brodie case. 8 February 1990 The full text of the Dave Brodie article: Brodie was 'careless' David Brodie's six month ban for using illegal fuel, and the overturning of his subsequent appeal, has been quantified by the RAC MSA. In it's February bulletin, the governing body states that its stewards ”took the gravest view of Mr Brodie's careless, casual and irresponsible conduct in not ensuring that the fuel he was using in both these races (the BTCC rounds at Thruxton on May 1 and May 29) met appropriate requirements”. However, the stewards were unable to prove that Brodie had ”knowingly used illegal fuel”. Brodie's six month ban began on January 17. He was asked to pay for one half of the costs of the appeal. My question is, as I'm a little confused as how to read this article, did Dave Brodie have his appeal overturned and thus lost his Thruxton win? Jesper |

Cleland failed to move away at the start of the parade lap and didn't start rolling until after everyone else had passed him, so he started from the back. However, he moved to the tail end of the 'odd' side of the grid, so Cleland actually started from 33rd, with everyone else on the odd side behind him moving ahead a row. The two Drury Sierras are impossible to tell apart in the grid shots on my copy, but I think it was likely Dooley that started in 16th with Hepworth in 24th. This assumption is based on the fact that Dooley is shown running near Godfrey Hall during the race. The BMW M3 that is 22nd on the grid is red, so that suggests either Nettan Lindgren or Alan Minshaw, more likely the Demon Tweeks M3 since it also had yellow signwriting. Nick May must have struck troubles during the race, as he was running on his own when he was being lapped early in the race. As Jerry Mahony lapped May on the entry to Stowe, the Sierra driver moved to resume his line, only to find the Maserati still occupying the space to his left. The contact led Mahony to spin into the gravel into retirement. The on-board camera footage suggested that Mahony felt the Maserati driver was to blame, but the exterior shots showed that Mahony was being a bit optimistic in moving over when he did. Yep, I read it the same way. Brodie lost his Thruxton win and, since he was using illegal fuel at both Thruxton rounds, I assume he also lost his 14th place from Round 5 as well. |

I got a copy of the official qualifying times at the Birmingham Superprix and I put it together with some notes from Autosport and Motoring News. No official race results yet but hopefully I will get it soon.
I don't know how to use code to edit Jesper's posts but I have put up an Excel file of the 1989 BTCC details from the Superprix so perhaps someone can put up the edited details into Jesper's post of the BSP results and grid. 1989_BSP_BTCC.xls |

Cheers, bigears! Assembling all the information in the thread so far, this is what the table looks like:
Round 11 of 13 of the 1989 Esso RAC British Touring Car Championship held on Monday August 28th 1989 over 20 laps of the 3.975 kms Birmingham street circuit.
Grid positions reflect where the cars actually started. Everyone moved up one grid position with the removal of each non-qualifier. Goode started from the rear after Jordan withdrew. The tail of the grid curling around the tight final corner makes it hard to see in the video, but everyone behind Jordan appears to have moved up one grid position, instead of everyone directly behind moving up one row. |

Just found the manufactures standing of the 1989 BTCC at the bottom of the final Silverstone race results:
1. Ford, 260 points 2. BMW, 167 points 3. Vauxhall, 156 points 4. Toyota, 114 points Don't know how points were distributed and can't work it out either. With Ford winning 13 races and scoring 260 points, that would mean 20 points for a class and overall win...with no dropped scores? I'm posting this for your suggestions, as I am putting final touches to the drivers standings. Jesper |

Final standings of the 1989 Esso RAC British Touring Car Championship - unofficial
Class A (over 3000 cc)
All in all 37 drivers in class A and perhaps a few more, as results from round 7 are only partial. Legend: Asp. The point standing given in the Autosport season review late December Myp. My calculation Best 11 from 13 scores counted 9, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point for top-6 positions * including one point for fastest lap [] position outside top-6 DNF did not finish DNS did not start DNQ did not qualified did not attend ? don't know if driver participated or not Dave Brodie won round 4 as well as set the fastest lap of the race only to be disqualified. This moved the entire field up on spot, but this is not reflected in the Autosport standings as the case was yet unresolved. This explains most of the off-set point tallies. Brodie likely given a 2 x 2 maximum score penalty ending him on negative points. Can't explain why Andy Rouse end up with 1 point too many and Robb Gravett with 2 too many. Gleaming at the other classes both drivers of the 1-hour Donington race round 4 was given a bonus point for fastest lap. That's why I have Jeff Allam at seven and not six as in Autosport. The other classes to come later Jesper |

1. Ford, 229 points 2. BMW, 143 points 3. Vauxhall, 124 points 4. Toyota, 94 points So, over the next two rounds, Ford scored another 31 points, BMW another 24, Vauxhall another 32 (!), and Toyota another 20. I'm not sure how this could work, either! Outright places must not be a big factor, otherwise Vauxhall could never outscore Ford over the final two rounds. The amount of the manufacturer's cars in each class looks like it might matter, but then why does Vauxhall achieve a score so similar to BMW? In fact, how does Vauxhall outscore BMW over the final few rounds? I had an idea of class points 9-6-4-3-2-1 +1 for FL, a possible 26 points per round over 10 counting rounds. It doesn't work though, as BMW would theoretically score more-or-less the same as Ford. Maybe entries had to be registered to score manufacturer's points? |

I have been rummaging through the Autosport reports once again and found some more manufactures standings over the season:
The Ford points after round 10 should likely read 200 and then 220 after round 11. Essentially Ford seems to have scored maximum points with a 20 points per race. BMW and Vauxhall has a lot of 12 points per round scores, while Toyota seems to have mainly 10 points per round scores. Don't know if the results of Maserati (Class A), Volkswagen and Peugeot (Class C) and Honda (Class D) should be considered? Jesper |

More 1989 unofficial point standings
Class B (2001-3000 cc)
This time the points comparison is based on that of the BTCC page (more complete than the Autosport review) and my calculations. Nettan Lindgren likely didn't received 3 points for either rounds 8 or 10 and her points would match ...as would those of John Clark, as he would then move up one notch! Confirmation would be much appreciated. Rotten season for defending second placed Godfrey Hall. His car smashing accident at Brands in the summer was to be costly. Ian Forrest coming on strongly in the latter part of the season, but both beaten by a very consistent John Llewellyn. Only Steve Soper received the fastest lap bonus point for the Donington 2-driver 1-hour race. This would mean that Jeff Allam in class A stands to loose one of "my" points. Class A (over 3000 cc)
A few revisions. Robb Gravett likely had to drop his bonus point from round 5. Bonus point for fastest lap removed from Jeff Allam in round 4, moving him down to 12th with David Sears moving up to 11th. Jesper |

I'd love to have seen the TV coverage if they'd pulled that off! |

Cleland (56- RHD race car) http://www.supertouring.co.uk/galler..._astra_90b.jpg http://www.touringcartimes.com/news/btcc09100504.jpg Rossiter (57- LHD ex-rally car) http://images.forum-auto.com/mesimag..._800.jpg1..jpg The car seems to have been reliveried to match the Cleland and Aitken-Walker cars, as I'm sure I've got a pic of it in Autosport which shows it in a similar paintscheme to the rallycars, with large 'Mobil 1' decals on the side, rather than the 'Vauxhall' logo: http://images.forum-auto.com/mesimag...iuui%20159.jpg There are a couple of pics of Louise A-W in the LHD car in Graham Robson's 'BTCC in Camera' book showing it in this state. One also shows it wearing the white (OZ I think?) wheels used on the rallycars, similar to these http://images.forum-auto.com/mesimag...frgrzsdsrg.jpg IIRC it didn't get proper 'race' suspension and single-stud hubs until it had done a couple of races |
