This is the official release colour of the new Focus ST. I suspect getting one in an understated colour may take a little while yet!

Perhaps we need to define "middle age"? Most people in their 50s or 60s tend to consider themself "middle aged", but statistically speaking, the average 40 year old has already passed the mid point of their life.

Not sure why they chose the name they did, perhaps trying to find something 'in period'?

Can't be. It's short for HOT HATCHBACK, so there are missing letters between the HATCH and the S which should be replaced with an apostrophe. Your version would suggest its the hatches that are hot!!

If it were an abreviation it should be "hatchback(s)". And the apostrophe still doesn't do it.

How can hatchback(s) be an abbreviation of hatchbacks?

Now this is a conundrum, to be sure.
An apostrophe would infer "something belonging or pertaining to the hatchback or hatch". In this case you are attempting to simplify the plural of the abbreviation of hatchbacks. I agree that the apostrophe should not be there, but I'm b*ggered if I can explain why. Anyhoo... with the budget mentioned previously, an original Golf GTI Mk1 is possibly now too dear, but what about a Pug 205GTI (1.6 or 1.9), nicely restored to standard spec.? |

A little known fact about the 205GTI 1.9 is that you can get them sideways down a country lane at deep into 3 figures, hold it and drag it back again without killing the car, yourself, your passenger (and owner of the car) and anyone in your path...
... but nobody knows how. Er, apparently. ... ... |

I would say.... OMG, Dunno, Init!
Well I do live in Essex Anyway, I had a go in one of these once... awesome! No idea what one would cost now, but if I could afford one I think I wouldn't care what anyone thought. Hotest of all standard factory hot hatches... ever? Last edited by dtype38; 30 Mar 2012 at 16:24. |

How about this for a proper hot hatch. The one owner since 1983 was my brother, then myself, then my brother again so the story isn't quite true plus one or two other things that aren't quite what they say.
What's really annoying is that he was going to sell it back to me last year but the silly ****er gave it away along with another similar one. |

Interesting..... are we suggesting that a middle age man can get away with a hot hatch so long as it's at least half his age?

And if we are, does the same apply to the bit of skirt in the passenger seat?

If you want a under stated performance hatchback that I dont think has been mentioned yet then how about the latest spec Mazda 3 MPS? Relatively cheap, 260bhp and 0-60 in under 6 seconds, not a bad car overall and certainly one I would be considering if I was going down the petrol route again.
