Interesting points in today’s Gerhard Berger interview in Autosport.
“Britain is going to be booming on (FIA) F4, especially as it looks like Ford is going to be the partner- that could not be better. And knowing that it is going to be run on the weekends of Alan Gow’s BTCC, it is going to be a no brainer. There will be a full field and Britain’s going to have a new, perfect way to build up young drivers.” And this conclusion from the Austrian "We need Britain to understand that you need to be clear - you cannot do favours to everyone. Britain has failed for so many years. It is the strongest single - seater country in the world (historically), but it is a mess." |

I find it strange that despite there already being an 'F4 series' in Britain, there's gonna be another one. Another thing..doesn't MSV and Jonathan Palmer hold the rights to using the F4 name in Britian? Berger can't use F5 there...the boot should be on the other foot.

You are all assuming MSV F4 will continue after this season, or even retain the same name if it does
I can seen the series stopping &/or a financial arrangement been made so the F4 name can be used for the FIA spec series, whilst the current cars are taken back to bedford for a FPA style series for pay drivers and no longer been a serious series for drivers aiming for a career in racing. |

Let's see first how much the British version of Formula 4 will cost. It has to away from FR2.0 NEC territory otherwise it will fail miserably

WHat I fail to understand is that Gerhard Berger has totally forgotten that BRDC F4 already exists and considering that that series is already labelled as Formula 4, what he is actually doing is saturating the market, which is not what he wants.

you cannot saturate a market that is already well beyond saturated. what he's trying to do is create a clear premiere championship at that level. with time, the top teams and drivers will gravitate towards that championship and all the others like BRDC F4 will fall by the wayside...

It's only F4 in name though. The BRDC one has tubeframe cockpits while the FIA version has only carbon.

I suspect one reason for saying the new UK variant with Ford will have the actual championship name released later is that some interesting conversations need to be concluded over the use of the terms Formula 4 & F4 |

sure, but nobody else races with that car. if the FIA had said the BRDC F4 car is the standard, then formula ford, etc. would go by the wayside. what berger is trying to do is standardize everything. there used to be a clear ladder to F1, but not anymore.

Obviously discussions on-going regarding the naming of the UK series, is this Jonathan Palmer trying to be difficult by withholding the F4 name or does he have something to lose if he loses that title? And what would Ford gain by having the F4 name?
I can see what JP has to lose, two years of marketing a brand that he would have to change. Then again, changing the name to something iconic like Formula Junior could even benefit him. Could we see a complete reverse, BRDC F4 becoming BRDC Formula Ford and MSA Formula Ford becoming MSA F4? How do people see this working? This is the first time I have known a situation like this, although that is just a lack of experience. I am sure many of you probably have far more intelligent observations than by baseless musings! |

It's a completely legal problem, Palmer will have to see how strong is his position and then he'll have to take something out of the FIA
I'm sure he has good relationship with them, so there won't be big dramas. |

In Argentina is a national interest to revive Formula 4, a place that is used by several "Formula 4" series, mainly by Formula Renault 2.0 at national level, and Formula Metropolitana, Formula Renault Plus and other formulae at regional levels.
These formulae don't have carbonfibre chassises but fiberglass with tubular ones, old school. |
