Lovely car John.
On the subject of Meadows engines one of my favourite reads is "From Chain Drive to Turbocharger" by Jenks. It chronicles the story of AFN Porsche going back to before the chain drive days. IIRC Nash were originally on East Hill in Wandsworth, a stone's throw from where I spent some of my formative years. Also not far from the Young's Brewery. Reading the MGOC magazine yesterday they have a piece on the P Type midgets. I'd forgotten the pace of development in engines at that time. Along with Meadows and others, power outputs were increasing quite dramatically in a very short space of time. Of course in the case of MG the four cylinder engines were less than 1000cc. |

Well, John, as you know that Corsica Coachworks body came off a prewar Alfa 2300 - I just fell in love with the shape …… when I first saw it on the Alfa back in the 1960s!

Very interesting editorial in the VSCC mag this month re their aged membership and the need to get younger folk involved but shifting the dates for eligible cars.
While the VSCC has been rather "public school" that no longer means being very rich. When any of the cars were bought when their owners were young, they were very cheap compared to a then modern car. Now when the sons or grandsons inherit the cars, they may like them but they realise the value of the cars is a life changing sum; a very nice house at the least. The "new money" people who are able to buy and run vintage cars are different and VSCC events don't appeal. They are more like to go on long rally tours as run by HERO and others, semi competitive but a good jolly and stay at nice hotels etc. |

To be accurate, it's the Pre War Thread, inspired by JR.

Going back to VSCC
Agree with the points made about the Club in its present state. We used to do odd event but it was not a great fit. Won a race at Snetterton so next time we entered found we were not on start list as driver to quick! We do MRL Pre war races which are 40 / 60 mins rather than 5/8 lap sprints A few people have been lost to the rally group but that is less strong than 8/10 years ago when it was led by ERA. The present organisers are not in same class as earlier people A few of us would question the fancy hotels point! Been stuck in some real iffy joints None of today’s rallies approach the standard of Liege Rome 15/20 years ago Our programme this year for Pre War includes four MRL races ( Donington, Silverstone, Thruxton and Spa). Our main event Le Mans Classic and Flying Scotsman Rally The days when we would do three major rallies a year are over. The thing I most miss is Euro Classics that we’re not competitive but visited over the years most major circuits in Western Europe where you were allowed to go round in circles for an hour all the main rally stages plus interesting places . Another subject.,JT’s car . Like many cars Alfa had saloon body discarded and made into an open sports like 8c body. Most VDP Bentley’s are saloons rebodied and one of the Talbot people specialise in producing replica 105’s based on old log books and new parts That’s the way it is! |

Sorry guys for delay, but JR has touched upon it. Long story but will try to keep it short. It's a 1936 Talbot BA75 (Straight 6 2300cc). It once carried a standard Talbot Sports saloon body but like so many that gradually fell apart. Seperately, according to Simon Moore's book on the Alfa 2300, this one off Corsica body, was chopped down to return the Alfa to a Le Mans type roadster (more valuable but I know which body I'd prefer). However, I came upon this car at Ivor Bleaney's (about 2003/2004) in the New Forest (an advert in Motor Sport IIRC). Something about it looked familiar (and desirable!), so with some redundancy money in my pocket, I and my eldest son, Kev, went down to look at it where I was informed that the Talbot body had been fitted with one discarded from an Alfa 2300 by a Lord (name temporarily forgotten!). Short story is I bought it. The engine ran but it couldn't be driven as the water pump had broken, so trailered back to my place. I had some bodywork done but then life got in the way and it sat in the driveway, and then in my garage when I moved to Lincolnshire, until a couple of years ago when Gareth was given the very dubious task of sorting it. Back to the body - I was able to contact Simon and send him a picture, and he confirmed that it was indeed the same body, and that he had clearly been misinformed by the owner of the Alfa, that it had been modified into an open touring body. Anyway, enough of this; here's a photo of an Alfa I took in the late 1960s in a Silverstone car park. Not surprising that the body on the Talbot looked familiar. The second shows the Talbot shortly after I acquired it:- Last edited by John Turner; 4 Feb 2021 at 11:19. |

Oh, and the body colour is as it came to me. One of Gareth's guys spent a couple of days just cutting back and polishing.

Although, if I say so myself, I'm quite good at replicating that cheap mass produced quality have been discussing old LAmbretta paint with friends recently, by the mid/late 60's the last of the Bertone designed bikes had paint so thin you could see the grain of the steel pressing through it! |

JR. When looking through my archives, and see a picture of a big green car built like a block of flats, I think of you. Sadly me education did not run to Talbot cars, real or replica, so I apologise for any offence caused.

Interesting exercise yes, but at what point do you call a halt to acceptable development of an old car when trying to compete with modern one.
We've been here before, but the money pit head banging scenario seems to be spreading to all corners of histrionics. |

We built it for rallies ,that in most cases tend to seriously mess up cars ,and using original cars does them no good messing up their historical heritage. It’s a similar situation with GT40’s Whats the point of racing a proper historic car when you can buy a copy for 10% of value of an original car and race that. It’s up to organisers to police the entrants. There are very few GT40’s that are in original condition and same thing applies to most major Pre War cars. |
