Maybe we all just have it wrong - any indiscretion, no matter how small - park the car and disqualify them.

You're right, the current system of 'racing' is flawed.

What do people want to see? Crashes! Let's just make it all a big demolition derby, and you'd have a truckload more punters come along, and there would be no judicial issues. Heck, you could probably get a permit from the AAA!

I was in Bass Strait stand. While the PA left a bit to be desired, it soon became pretty clear what was happening. From then on, you could see people getting out the stop watches (mine's in the mobile phone) and timing the distance between Rossi and Capirossi. That in itself made for an exciting finish to what was a disappointing race (as far as Bayliss went).

Don't underestimate the fans.

For a minor infringement, a 10 sec or whatever length of time, penalty, seems to be a lot fairer than a stop/go, which in our arcane system of racing, where you have long pitlanes at a ridiculous 40 km/h, it pretty well puts paid to what could be a good race. In Rossi's case, he turned the wick up and it was great to watch.

MotoGP races are all the same length, like F1 and World Superbikes.

Anyway, the weekend saw the difference between how a world class event can be run, and what we see the rest of the year.

Racetime put it rather succinctly, I reckon, with his comments about time penalties instead of stop/go penalties. I really reflects the amateurism that the V8 scene, CAMS, etc. shows.

And no, this ain't a bike versus cars thing.

I don't know. I watch guys like Skaife, Ambrose and Jim Richards lap after lap at places like QR or OP (or anywhere else for that matter), and they are inch perfect. Then they get to a place like Surfers, where the fastest way to get through the high kerbs is to be aggressive. Aggressive equal black flag, and nobody likes it. Once again the NZ star picket would fix it
