Regarding the Keith Holland dip at Mallory, I watched as they hauled it out at the end of the meeting. There was a marine salvage guy racing (Terry Sanger??) and he lept(!) into the cold muddy water to attach the tow rope.

A FFord also rolled over into the mud when the lake was low in the 70's. The car was cleaned and restarted during the lunch break but I can't remember if he raced-he smelt very "sweet" though!

And finally....

A stunt driver lauched an Austin 1100 off a ramp into the lake in the early 80's

Terry Sanger was the driver of the Harrier that tangled with Keith Holland. The marine salvage guy was Fred Saunders who was also in the same race in a Crossle.

That was it! I was always told it ran out of fuel so I just posted it...

Eddy Cheever a very long time ago during a German race at Zolder.

He locked the brakes on the BMW group 5 in practice on the approach to the first lefthander. Went through the catchfencing, over the armco (still at the same speed), clobbered a hording and went nose first down the very steep bank (about 6 meters) into the marsh pond.

Stayed very cool and rather dry about it.
It took the recovery trucks about an hour to clear the car from that position.

There was the infamous Radio One funday at Mallory Park in the late 70's. To try and put the Bay City Rollers into a place of safety from their hoardes of fans, they were put into a boat which then took them out to the centre of the lake.
Some of the daft girls then proceded to dive into the water and swim out to meet their heroes!
I also seem to remember the same fans actually running across the track during races to try and meet the 'Rollers.
(It's possible that they were trying to meet 'The Wombles' who were also there, but I think the mud splattered white & tartan trousers prove otherwise!).

Davhut, remember the old Dallas International Raceway? They had a small pond way off in the center of the thing. The course was completely lined with double or triple Armco, but they always proclaimed at the drivers meetings that they had "a diver on duty" in case you ended up in the pond. Always wondered what kind of shape you would be in if you ever got off the course that far!

Ending up in the lake

West Palm Beach (Moroso) used to have armed (knives) divers because of the water and the gators. Never saw one, BUT!
Same track, Jim Crawford testing the 1st B29 Chevron in white came in with red all over the nosecone and he was the colour of the car. Big rattler in middle of back straight.

Quoting an old post, but anyhow, Tina Thorner was the co-driver in this particular incident.

Also, when it comes to Lake Lloyd at Daytona, Bay Durnell ended up in the lake during an ARCA race in the mid-1960's, and roughly thirty years later, in 1993, Dave Stacy crashed into the dirt bank and flipped into the lake as well (also during an ARCA race).

I don't remember that incident - who was the Imp driver?

I remember a Lotus Elan driver losing his life in the Oulton lake in the mid-sixties. I think he was called John Waterhouse.

I have just checked the Motorsport memorial site and the driver was Stuart Howitt. He rolled his Hillman Imp into the water and mud at Knicker Brook on June 15th 1968.

You'd be in deep MERDE, old friend, is what you'd be. I've reconnected with F5000 top driver Ron Grable and he about went into the thing on the inaugural race.
You recall the "lake" at Afton and the "dam" at Garnett? Big cojones places they were.

yes he was. He was my boyfriend at the time and we were getting engaged the next day on my 21st birthday. His lotus elan hit a tree. He was taken to hospital with broken ribs, a punctured lung and many more injuries. He later died in hospital while sitting up in bed and turning over and puncturing his other lung. He was an ex gocart racer who used to race with Tony Dean who died 17 Jan 2008. I was secretary to barc yorkshire centre at the time called kath reyner. anyone remember more?

Kathy
I remember you.

I believe John was from Harrogate where I am from also, though I did not know John. It was very sad at the time though from what you say he should have been better looked after in hospital. I thought he went in the water but now I remember it was a tree he hit.

Sorry to hear of Tony Dean's death - he was one of the local heros of the time and I remember seeing him many times at Rufforth, Croft, Cadwell etc. - especially his races in the ex-works Lotus Cortinas with Brian Robinson. If I remember correctly he was racing the Cortina in the race at Cadwell when David Pearson was killed in his Anglia. It seems that a lot of club racers were killed in the 60s/70s, thank goodness that safety items have been forced on us and circuits made safer.

I had my very first visit to Mallory in October this year, taking part in the Classic Thunder event, what a fabulous circuit. On arrival I thought how quirky it was, blokes fishing in the midst of us lot tearing about around them. My first impression was of fear of an early bath, however, usual story, flag drops, red mist, what lake?

OK, so thats the Oulton & Mallory lakes. Does anyone know of any excursions into the Cadwell Park lake between Barn & the pit lane? Surely somebody must have had a watery diversion???

A Polish rally driver and co-driver have a lucky escape, due to some quick thinking spectators:

Rally spectators FTW. Well done that lot.

It's not a lake, but during the 2011 Targa Newfoundland, Zahir Rana put his Enzo EDO into the Atlantic.
