Yeah, compared to the European racing scene the support-race system works a bit different in NASCAR - it's usually just a single race per day, so the ARCA RE/MAX race is today, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on Saturday and the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race on Sunday.
Sometimes, when it's a really crowded weekend, you might even have races on Wednesday or Thursday. |

He'll run well. The big NASCAR teams can put up a pretty massive effort when it comes to the plate tracks compared to the ARCA guys. Unless something happens I'd guarantee a top-10, be pretty sure of a top-5, and not be surprised if he won. Bobby Gerhart will be hard to beat though, he is the best plate driver in ARCA and he always has a fast car.

And the race is being televised tonight on Speed TV at 6 pm mountain time, in case anyone missed it. Looking forward to that.

Yeah, it comes on at 8:00 pm on the East Coast of the U.S. However, the race is being run as a tape delay. It will be interesting to see Montoya drive at Talladega. The talent level he will be racing against isn't as great, obviously, as Busch or Cup, but on the other hand the drivers do have good talent.

I suggest we keep this thread spoiler free until the ARCA race at least has been shown in full on Speed later tonight. For race spoilers, go to this thread instead.

Some excerpts from the article:
http://www.nascar.com/2006/news/head...ega/index.html Yet Montoya isn't caught up in the circus surrounding his arrival. He doesn't mind giving up the luxurious surroundings he had at F1 races in Monaco to stay at a Hampton Inn and eat at a Lone Star Steakhouse as he did during a test here last week. Relish aside, he loves hot dogs as much as he does caviar. Montoya isn't doing this because he wanted a change in lifestyle, although he's more relaxed than ever in what he calls the friendly environment of NASCAR. He's doing this because he loves racing and needed a new challenge in his life. "When I made this decision I wanted to enjoy what I was doing," said Montoya, who qualified second for the ARCA race and finished third when it was called for darkness. "I was losing the pleasure of racing and driving, and I didn't want to do that before I got here." And these: "This isn't so much different than the fans in Germany," Pablo said with a laugh. "The Germans drink a lot of beer, too." If anything, Pablo likes NASCAR fans better than those in F1, comparing them to European soccer fans because they are so rabid. "They live for this," he said. "In F1 you have a lot of people who go to the races just to show themselves or have people look at them. Not too many have a good idea of what's going on. "Here, you'll have [more than 150,000] people on Sunday and 90 percent of them know what it's all about." |

JPM 5th quickest of 53 in the first practice in the ARCA race at Newton, Iowa...this is his first true test. Talladega is not real racing. This will be his first stockcar race in which he has to brake for turns, get the car to handle well, etc. So far, so good.

Juan Montoya will drive in the Busch race at Memphis on October 28. It also looks likely that he will drive in the Nascar Cup race at Homestead in the season's final race. He has practiced at Homestead which is a good indication of him racing there. The Busch race will be interesting, to say the least.

As far as I know, he won't be racing this week.
He was very quick on the final day of his Homestead cup series test--outpacing his teammate. He seems to be taking to stock cars like a duck to water, although, of course, there will still be a learning curve. I worried about him being way off the pace initially. That does not seem likely. |

Keep the updates coming guys, they are making good reading, and the excitement comes through each post.
I thought he made a good point about the F1 crowd behaving like peacocks and the NASCAR fans like enthusiasts. |

i am really anxious to see Montoya racing at Memphis. He is looking good and is the kind of driver that "belongs" in Nascar. He has talent, is learning fast and likes the Nascar style of racing.

A little snippet:
"Kevin Harvick came by the pits and he talked to my crew chief and he said 'I think Juan's car is a little low here and you should try this,'" Montoya said. "You wouldn't see that in Formula One." In an interview session, Montoya showed he's a man of a million faces -- though if he's got the moods to match, that's still unknown in these parts. He put one on us, then. "In Formula One you'd see that and you would be laughing at them," Montoya said, making an evil laugh and a face that depicted pure ridicule. "You don't get help from anything [in Formula One]. "If you see somebody struggling in Formula One, you're never going to go and say, 'you're making this wrong.' You actually go to your guys and you say, 'you see what they're doing wrong?'" Harvick's reaction, and the fact his Ganassi Racing teammates, Reed Sorenson and Casey Mears, each got in his car at Homestead to give him tips, only makes Montoya secure in his decision. "It's great to see that and it's one of the reasons I came here," Montoya said. "Everybody's so friendly. When you go down to business it's down to business -- but everybody is so open and so relaxed and everybody wants to help [so] it's a lot nicer." You can read the whole thing here: http://www.nascar.com/2006/news/opi...phis/index.html |

I was checking out the updates on NASCAR main page. No idea what's happening, but he was running 10th a while there. Not too bad so far it seems.
