Happy birthday, Iain. Race entry fees paid for by the government now.
The car that got away from my brother and I was one of the Alan Mann Escorts we bought from Chris Meek/Tate of Leeds (owned by Doug Niven prior to that and in the Border Reivers colours of blue with saltire cross on the roof) as we wanted the 1800cc BDA engine for the Escort we were building and sold on the rest of the car to Stuart Turner from Manchester (not the Ford Motorsport one) who then sold it on to Alistair Lyall who won the first race at the reopened Donington Park in 1977. In those days ex-works cars had not much value! Stupid or what? |

Think I welcomed you to 'the 'club' before Iain, but that's what age does to you!
Presumably you'll be adding something a little stronger to the Latte for this morning's coffee break? |

While on the subject of Iain, he comments on the Goodwood thread how he enjoyed his steak sandwich at dinnertime. No criticism meant to Tenth's Delta, but how messed up (that is rather tame; I mean to describe it akin to a child born out of wedlock) the British English language has become. And this has happened over decades, not just recently.
Take for example what Iain said. I assume that he was referring to eating something around midday, which I would refer to as lunch, whilst no doubt Charlie Gordon-Lennox, but better known as the Earl of March although he has ascended to the title of Duke of Richmond following his father's passing, would refer to it as luncheon. Moving on through the day, people refer to eating their meal as a tea at teatime. For me, though, teatime would be the occasion that the cucumber sandwiches, with the crust cut off the bread, with other such goodies would be wheeled out. And on those rather rare occasions, we might have a light repast later in the evening, which would be referred to as a supper. But on most days, the meal taken in the evening was called a dinner and the time at which that is eaten is therefore dinnertime. I would pose the question to anyone who hasn't fallen asleep by now as to what you would do if invited to be a guest for dinner by a friend or acquaintance? Would you arrive in the middle of the day, or would you go in the early evening? Just one little thing about the use of the English language. And don't get me started on how the Americans have absolutely trashed one of the most beautiful languages in the world. |

Breakfast, Lunch(eon), Tea (Teatime)(optional) usually late afternoon but High Tea would be circa 5/6pm as a target time, Dinner for early evening repast, usually substantial, Supper for a later snack but possibly brought forward if Teatime had been observed. These days I would imagine that times would always be mentioned and then likely "re-managed" via some form of social media or mobile connectivity. Of course in these days of eating in the hoof snatching different courses as one passes different fast food vendors the "naming of meals" seems to be becoming somewhat irrelevant. |

In other news, bit of bad publicity (if there is such a thing) for a business well known in historic racing circles. |

I’m sure not the only investor in old cars to get their fingers burned. Think anyone wanting to do so really needs to have some knowledge of the market, even if working with a broker / dealer...... Like the small print always says- “prices can go down as well as up” or something like that!

I sometimes despair over the classic car scene. Does this not typify all that is wrong in that people with loads of money but with (as far as I can tell from the story) little or no interest in classic cars pay silly money for a car on the basis that in a few years time they will be able to sell at an obscene profit.
The outcome is that the prices spiral out of the reach of real enthusiasts all the way down to what should be affordable classics. Look through classic car magazines at the glossy full page spreads of the dealers and shake your head at the silly money being asked and, it seems now, being paid, by those with loadsa money. I can't say I feel sorry for those that may be duped. There is a well known saying ..... 'let the buyer beware!' |

We still have our MGB road car. When I look at the prices for restored examples it makes me happy.

Likewise my 1200 deluxe Cortina, just over 20 000 miles on it now, original paint and I refuse to sell it, I know exactly what would happen to it if I ever did.
