Car flips over near Bisham Roundabout.
Headline from Bucks Free Press. He's at it again. |

You're right Bob, we should learn more from our best friends from Greece… Was the picture taken before the LR rolled or after? Anyway, this car is a dog!
What about Mike H's interesting question? Last edited by Gerard C; 20 Jan 2019 at 17:46. |

Going back to downdraft carbs on 105Es, the Cosworth MAE 997cc engine used a modified head with the inlet ports coming out of the top (alongside the rocker cover) at approx 60 degrees to horizontal. Two twin choke Weber’s were used where regs allowed. Pretty sure all to do with improved gas flow at high rpm. As to why the idea wasn’t used on larger capacity engines, my guess is that they didn’t rev high enough to warrant it. Another tenther that knows far more than me on the subject is Gordon....

Mike has posted up all the three tracks we are going to Tim. £3000.00. That includes all the inland transport as well. Interesting is that we pay £3000.00 to go to South Africa but that includes all the entry fees. We have to pay NZ entry fee but that's around £150 a race meeting. I think we get a fair bit of track time. "in the sun".

The screamers you mentioned were F3 ones, said to be 10K Rpm capable. The Cosworth or Holbay had very special ports you couldn't see on the Renault or Fiat. And of course anything above the 7,5 mark was quite a challenge for the french engine. In my last link it is said that Renault supplied special cranks to the competitors while we all know the major issue was coming from the block! Back to Mike H question, may be the Weber was a better choice than any Solex or SU!!

And to the question why an allen key and why was it so hard, may be its because he was using allen screws and he is not ob-gyn !

0441 to 0543am, so if there’s no cloud I’ll see it when get up- If I remember.... Gerard, another engine that tends to need allen bolts for the manifolds is the TR4 unit. Again, it’s the two central bolts that are so closed in, and it’s the only way to turn them. One flat at a time...... And a suggestion why the larger capacity Ford pre-crossflow engines didn’t use downdraft carbs as the MAE did, is because the special ports were too small for the amount of air and fuel flow required. |

Tim, the 3K figure for NZ would have been less if we had managed to fill the containers. We've only got 8 cars this time, last time we took 12 in 2 boxes. Travel between circuits would the same as the cars travel in the club's containers.

There were several kicking about in the 70/80s that were mostly made by what I would call "garden shed" mechanics and I had a couple but never found them very successful. Getting a decent casting for a start wasn't always easy and after machining out the holes to braze (I have seen them fitted in with high temp resins) the inlet port tubes in, it made the head weak as there isn't a lot to start with after you have skimmed the head to get a decent compression ratio (Joe will bare me out on skimming too much off and head gasket problems on this engine) I remember one 1500 D/D one that was quite successful that I used to race against but was also a well built car and driven well, but most of them worked better on the 997 /1100 & 1340cc engines. In the end I sold the couple that I had and just used the non C/F and C/F heads depending in what series I was in and found that they were more reliable And to the old saying that "to finish first' first you have to finish! |

When Pete Alexander first appeared with the grey anglia (ex Steve/Liza read) that had a 1500 DD engine, came past the pits screaming, 9000 rpm, everyone went 'ooooh! That's fast)
No one batted an eyelid when I purred past at 7000rpm. . . 1s a lap faster. There's a lot more to it than just the port configuration, I have had a fair few DD heads, theres not much if any difference on a standard flow bench, port/valve sizes are generally the same for small and bigger capacity ones . . . It's how it delivers. For anything but an F3 and/or a strictly period restoration, like the Broadspeed Anglia, I think they're more hassle than they're worth. |
