A nice field at the front for the first race in VLN. Got the BMWs, a Hybrid Porsche driven by Jorg, Lietz and Ragginger, plenty of other Manthey Porsches with guys like Lieb, Westbrook, Tiemann and Bernhard, and quite a few Audi R8s.
The 24 hours is looking good. |

Some good faces in the R8s too such as Basseng, Stippler, Kaffer, Biela, Luhr, Collard, Ekstrom and Abt!
No Marco Werner, does his Highcroft drive actually mean he's out of the Audi camp rather than in the R8 program? Or are he and Pirro just sitting this one out? |

vln_swticker on twitter gives live updates, it is in german, but fairly easy to understand ("#1 in der Box"). Webcams (don't get exited, they are still images taken 1 per minute): http://autoya.info/nurburgring_track_webcam_24_hours/ |

With a little luck, every photo could be of an empty track despite the nearly 200 cars racing! Unless they're in the pits, of course!

Manthey Racing has won the first round, a successful first outing for the GT3-R.
One Audi and one BMW wrap up the podium, both Phoenix Racing R8s suffered gearbox woes - Not exactly encouraging for the Audi squad. Don't read too much into these results as most top teams have probably not shown their full speed yet. Everybody's waiting for the 24h race in six week's time to show their full hand. |

Just came home from the track and had a blast! I really didn't think that Manthey stood a chance to win that one after Audi were 1-2-3-4 around mid race...
I am however a bit dissapointed by BMW, if it hadn't been for both Phoenix cars and the lead black Falcon Audi getting into trouble they would have been nowhere near the podium. Actually, the GT3 Z4s were quite a bit away from it anyway, but at least they sound AWESOME! |

The race again showed the rules are completely different in VLN than they are in other series.
BMWs not near the top three and the Hankook-Farnbacher Ferrari F430 GT2 down in 14th overall. |

I think for a number of reasons the Ferraris performance was not really representative for the cars abilities:
- Hankook has Nordschleife experience and Ferrari experience, but so far they have little experience with Ferraris on the Nordschleife - new car, teething problems are to be expected - Farnbacher don't have all that much Nordschleife experience themselves - and the same goes for at least one of their driver (Keen) But of course, it's also the Group SP7 air restrictor that's really killing the Ferrari, suppossedly they are 30kph slower than the GT3s on the Döttinger Höhe (longest straight). I am surprised they didn't put the car in E1XP with the Bimmers... |

Regarding the BMW: Keep in mind that their´re racing in a completely different class than the other competitors. They´re in E1XP and they will be the only cars in that class for the 24h aside from the Porsche Hybrid.
That's what leads me to believe they´re majorly sandbagging until the 24h race in order to not risk getting their performance cut. The majority of competitors race in SP9 (the class for FIA GT3 cars) and they would probably be outraged should the BMWs have a clear advantage. So take BMWs performance with a big grain of salt, they will be there when it counts. |

Full results
I noticed the other day that the M3s and the hybrid Porsche are in a class called E1XP. Why this new class? From the regulations, it seems like a class where whatever ADAC wants to let in, it can go in through there. I'm sure this has been asked before, but is the M3 a development of the GT2 one, sort of like the GT1-GT2 Corvette? That Manthey Porsche with Tiemann looks like the Risi Ferrari in ALMS. Somehow, they always end up at the top! |

E1XP is pretty much what you describe it to be, however, it is not a new class. Back in 03 the DTM-cars ran in there and (I think) also the Zak-Viper at some point.

Is there any video available online somewhere. I am genuinely interested in this form of racing but unfortunately converage in the states is lacking to say the least.
