Dan Rear should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Tony's Brook Hire Escort was brill, always turned up when entered, unlike many other Special Saloons of the time, the Corvair as mentioned above especially. I recall it had a BDE, so not quite as quick as the Whiting car, nor the bigger engined Capris etc of the mid-70s, but well ahead of the 1300 Minis/Escorts of the time, which not all 'over 1300' class were. Anyone remember Paul Storr's Escort for example, or the Popemobile Magnum, these usually struggled to stay ahead of the 1-litres !

On the subject of Tony, 2 other points : first I wonder what happened to his team-mate Dave Millington in a fast Brook Hire Firenza, which usually raced in the Northwest; second, surely Tony is due an OBE or such, for long service to British Club Racing, and 30 years or so of entertaining the public ??

Saloon car racing has provided many long serving competitors. Gerry Marshall, Pete Baldwin, Skid Scarborough, the list goes on. Pete - I remember him racing an orange Mini 850 at Snett in 1969, still in an orange Mini today!

An example of the single seater basis of so many super saloons. The Players Corvair-bodied F5000 Lola raced by Frank Gardner down under in 1976.

I've just got onto this thread and this image pretty much brought tears to my eyes. Donington, along with Mallory and Cadwell, was one of my regular circuits as a kid in the Seventies and Eighties.

Correct me if I've got it wrong, but wasn't it Walter Robertson - borrowing, I think, another competitor's yellow Skoda - who rolled it out of the chicane and pretty much into the spectator area after contact with Doug Niven's Beetle?

So many years ago, so apologies if I've got a few things wrong. But it was a monumental shunt and I recall the car pretty much going over my head as I watched. Driver got out OK.

And Donington - without the hospitality suites on the inside of Goddards!

Please, post more of Mick Hill, Jeff Wilson, David Auger, Nicky Ellis, Peter Baldwin etc.

Have you seen that Tony Hazlewood has obtained his former DAFF55 Supersaloon, with the aim of rebuilding and racing it!!!!.
Is this the start of something?

Yes, saw that! And Keith is rebuilding the Beetle, Baby Bertha exists - could be a case for a 'superloon' revival race at the Silverstone historic meeting for example, as the BRDC were so supportive of the class in it's day and many of the 70s supersaloon drivers are members!

Sorry to be pedantic. "if he immigrated he'd be here".
He emigrated and went abroad.
I sort of recall it was to Canada, but might have been down under.

Keith, good to hear you have bought the Beetle and good to know that some people never learn!

The Trojan that Mick Hill came to look at in Kent was the unique Ian Ward run T102 which is sitting quietly less engine in my garage at the moment. Have spent too much time, effort and money getting the March GA race ready that the Trojan has had to take a back seat. If you want to take pictures or borrow the spare wishbones, etc., then let me know. I believe that the Beetle used the front suspension and complete back-end from the Trojan (engine, gearbox and rear suspension). I have some contemporary reports of the building of the Beetle and I think some pictures somewhere. Sorry, I don't have your phone number!

some bigger engined cars naturally raced in the upper capacity classes there also, like Bob Trotters V8 Escort,
IIRC that car was intended to have a 2 litre engine (BDG or something) - but Bob blew it up first time out testing and as he couldn't afford to get it repaired/replaced, he bought a Rover V8 from a local scrap yard, spent about £150 on new bits and used that instead.

After Bob stopped racing I think the car went down south and was raced at Lydden and Brands.

Incidently - I saw Bob a couple of years ago in the paddock at Oulton Park - mechanicing for his son, who had just started racing in the Fiat series.

You could almost start a "where are they now section."
Colin Hawkers Capri DFV was sold as rolling chassis to Doug Niven '75.
He used the engine and box from his written off Boss escort
Later bought Nick Whitings Kent Messenger 2litre escort before moving onto the Beetle.
Whitings 3.4 GA escort went to Scotland?
But where are they all now?
I said in an earlier post that this branch of motor sport was lost forever but this may not be the case as some are being re-born
I will keep watching this space for news of a revival race for them!

I have just found a Mallory Park program (15p)June 1973 with the likes of Bill Cox WRC Capri Chevrolet 5700, Dennis Nott Chevrolet Escort 5700 and Mike Berman Ford Berpop 3654. Where are these cars now? Brings back memories of being a child and first getting into racing.

Dave Millington had a 'young' Mike Waite on the spanners - so Mike told me yesterday. He confirms that Dave did go to Canada, where he believes he 'found God'

Mike Waite is one of the many who regularly views TT as a Guest, but doesn't bother to register If he ever does decide to 'sign up', I suggest he uses Stumpy as a screen name.

As a matter of interest, Dave Millington featured in an episode of Jim'll Fix It. He had a monster roll at Knickerbrook, going over many, many times. This was at the time of Jimmy Saville's 'Clunk Click Every Trip' seat belt campaign and Dave was held up as the living proof that seatbelts work.

Could some kind soul remind me what the Berpop was? I can remember reading about it and I know it fired the imagination, but I cannot now recall details.
Many thanks

Brilliant - many thanks. I confess to a weakness for the Early Perpendicular! You can still see them performing wonders on Classic Trials - but that is another thing altogether
