It comes from being taught how to use numbers at school rather than a calculator/computer, it was called mental arithmetic in my day

I used to know that, then I did a degree in engineering and became utterly reliant on my calculator.

I think it fits with websites and tv graphics, but maybe they should have used the classic design for some things like posters.
