MMM sponsored the Mazda team in 1995, they started the year with the older cars, one painted silver, the other painted black. From memory the silver one was racing at the Gold Coast Indy in 1995, didn't Allan Grice win one of the races in it there?
The SP model was debuted at the Calder round of the '95 GTP series, which also featured Dick Johnson in the other 'old-spec' RX7, now painted white, and would go on to win the 12 Hour at Eastern Creek in SP form. Gordon Leven converted his Group E Commodore back to road-going form. Living near his tyre service he regularly used to have the car parked outside, later on (after he stopped racing it) it was still parked outside, but in road-going form (from memory with a For Sale sign as well) |

Originally, there were two RX-7s that were run by Mazda in the 1992 and 1993 12Hrs. From what I understand, these two cars were sold on to Terry Bosnjak (or was it Peter Hopwood first?) and Peter McLeod, who ran the cars in the '94 12 Hour and other races. I think Bosnjak's might have been updated to SP-spec for the 95 12 Hour. Was it a Mazda or a Porsche that Bosnjak put in at Lake corner at Amaroo?
For 1994 Mazda built up two new cars. One of them is almost certainly the one sitting in the Bathurst museum, meaning that there must have been another car built up in 1995, probably in SP-spec from the ground up. |

If you're talking about Bosnjak's huge shunt roof-first into the wall at Stop-Go, that was the Porka, not the Mazda

No one knows anything about the Grice Akubra ute? Or, did that suffer the fate of return to a road car?

Yeah maybe? Frostys dad is well known speedway star from the 70's and his name is Jim Winterbottom! He used to race Super Modifieds mainly based at Liverpool Speedway! By the way, Jim's race number was number 41, which was Frosty's number in his S.B.R. Konica car from 2003!

Could be Harry Bargwanna, Jason's Dad and 1995 Australian Production Car Champion.
Jim Winterbottom was more than a star, he was once Australian Sprintcar Champion. Peter O'Brien - Bill's son? Seems more than just a pair of Falcons travelled North to Qld from the O'Brien family. |

It only ran radials when run under BF Goodrich sponsorship and i don't think it ran on them all the time then either. I think it was mainly for enduros.

It had a dreaful 1982 great race... the Barry Jones car, which ran Goodrich radials (with Steve Millen IIRC?) was a much more successful campaign... |

Henry 1983 Bathurst was a DNF as well Crashed and sustained damage to the right hand front guard and RH suspension and RH firewall
Not sure about its Group A history but I think it was logged as a Group A car around October 1985. It ran at the Adelaide AGP in '85 and many races in '89 Not sure what category it was in '89 but Harry Bargwanna owned it then. It also ran at a few meetings in 1990 then nothing till 1995. Can anyone else shed light on its history. I haven't really looked at it in any detail. |

Did it appear as the "Unleaded" Rx7 at Bathurst 1985?

Aw hell, Scanlens cars didn't make it out to the sticks... anyway it would've been the common card due to the ease in getting a clear photo of it: it didn't move to quick from memory...
