PS I think we should get back on topic or move this discussion to the 2006 LMES thread before we provoke the wrath of Aysedasi........

dos a closed top car have that a big advantage aerodynamically over an open one or is it marginal? and, how much more (just an idea) can a closed top car weight against an open one?
Suppose it should be difficult to answer, suppose it depends on the cars, but any estimations? Whay would you prefer a closed top against an open one?

One not very scientific reason is that these days, closed top prototypes seem to engender more positive vibes. People liked the Bentley for the name and also because it looked wonderful (and different to all the open top LMPs). The R8 was a great car but didn't really excite people, a closed top R10 may prove more popular as well as successful.

On the same argument, a closed top looks just a little more like a road car than an open top, and at the end of the day for Audi it is all about selling more cars.

(After all that I expect another ruthlessly efficient and slighly boring open top!)

What about a large greenhouse, but open at the top to keep the cockpit cool?

Pescarolo apparently tried this out.

that opening would afect aerodynamics, I believe...

Yes, badly effect aerodynamics. The benefit of the open top is the frontal area reduction. The closed top has a lower .cd. So to create an opening in your closed top roof does away with its inherent advantage.

At this point though I'm not sure there is much to choose from closed to open top. From a marketing standpoint you're right, I'd go with a closed top car.

Your point is well-taken, Mike....and in my mind, it answers a question I had about the Spyker when I first saw it at Sebring last March...

As far as overall weight, it would not be an issue for closed top, or open top, they would be the same.

Open and closed-top LMPs now have the same tire width/restrictor regs correct?

ok, so if the weight difference is minimal and the tire width/restrictor regs are equal for open and closed cars, then the only advantage to having a closed car is the aerodynamics.

Which is why i'm predicting the R10 will be a closed topped car.

This is a good read. And Peter Elleray addresses the positives and negatives of a coupe.

If winning Le Mans is the major goal for the new Audi, then closed-top would be the obvious choice in my mind. However, with definite competitive aspirations in the ALMS' sprint races, an open-top could be a viable option again.
