Manfred Burkhards made a single DTM start in an RS Turbo in 1986 at the Nürburgring on July 12 classified 20th. In my notes it says this is another HWRT/Wolf entry. Perhaps a bit interesting is the IRS Motorsport car entered at the 1986 Spa 24h which had Romain Wolff, J.-C. Probst and Manfred Burhard on the driving team. Pure speculation now, but the DTM race was used as a shake down test before selling the car off to IRS for the Spa race three weeks later, but I simply don't know. Thanks, Remy, for letting us know about your acquisition. Jesper |

Something interesting from a Motoring News race report in 1985. I think the big multi-car accident at Thruxton early in the season has been mentioned earlier in the thread- At least 3 of the Escorts were caught up in that, the Brooklyn cars of Hodgetts and Morris, and Patrick Watts' Julian May-run North Essex Motorsport car.
Scott R, who now owns the NEMS car mentioned early in the thread that his car was built as a replacement for the car destroyed at Thruxton- apparently, from the MN report from the next race at Silverstone, the new car was built up in 10 days from scratch, and finished in the Silverstone paddock! The main point, which is something I've had nagging at the back of my mind for a while, and which seems to be confirmed by this race report, is the apparent identity of the car Hodgetts used at the next race. 'Championship leader Chris Hodgetts' car was still being rebuilt following its involvement in the Thruxton debacle 'and we opted to build a completely new car in time for the Donington race (on July 14)'. Consequently, Chris borrowed mechanic Tim Hill's Group A rally car for the weekend, practicing the Brooklyn Motorsport/ECS machine complete with tax disc, aerial and number plates! 'It says a lot for the team when I can borrow a mechanic's car and race that' smiled Chris. 'It might be better if the circuit was cut up a little, I think it's probably better suited to the rough. Still, in the circumstances, it's not bad is it?' The unsuspecting rally vehicle was flung around in 1m47.94' (MN, 12/6/85) A pic in the report of Richard Belcher, Hodgetts and Alan Curnow does show the front number plate on the car, though it's not clear enough to read. Does anyone have a pic of the Tim Hill Brooklyn rallycar? John Morris used his regular car, which was repaired in time for Silverstone |

Thanks Remy- I only saw the magazine article briefly. It would be interesting to see a pic of the Burkhardt/Nodes Zolder ETCC car if anyone has one, and might shed some light on whether it was your car- I don't think I've ever seen a pic of any of the European GpA RS Turbos other than yours
On a slightly different tack, amongst the pics Eircamae86 has been posting on the Corolla thread, there's this shot from an AMSCAR race at Amaroo Park in 1986 http://tentenths.com/forum/showpost....&postcount=216 (look at the top pic) There's an Escort at the back of the grid, (top left in the pic) Is that the Andrew Bagnall Motorsport Pacific car, ex-Richard Belcher's John Jeffreys Engineering BTCC car? |

Was any of the Group A Ford models - Escorts, Sierras, Mustangs -competing in Oz on sale on the continent? The rare Escort RS2000 Mk. II is the only one I can think of.

Just found a set of pics from the '84 Donington ETC race on Flickr. On further investigation, photographer Peter Novani has posted quite a lot of Group A touring car stuff, including some interesting RS1600i pics
I think we might have mentioned the ex-Brooklyn car entered by Alan Gaunt of AJG Transport in 1988 for Mark Goddard? I think this is the first pic I've ever seen of it in Brooklyn colours http://www.flickr.com/photos/36111778@N08/3331751702/ Chris Hodgetts' Brooklyn car at Brands in '84 http://www.flickr.com/photos/36111778@N08/3330311905/ |

There's been a bit of discussion relevant to Mk3s on the Atlas/Autosport Nostalgia forum recently- a short thread on Richard Longman, and an on-going one on Duckhams sponsorship
A couple of pics contributed by to those threads that would definitely be of interest here... Another discovery- or mystery. A Longman-prepared RS Turbo ran at Macau in 1986. The Macau '86 result at http://homepage.mac.com/frank_de_jon...6%20Macau.html
only gives the top 3 places, so no mention of this one or who drove it. However, the car and a spares package is advertised for sale in Autosport in May '87, and the ad includes a pic- a white Escort, carrying #31 and 'C2000' sponsorship. What's interesting is that according to the ad, this isn't an ex-Datapost BTCC chassis, but was a new car built for Macau. Described as 'Prepared by Longman from new in November 1986. One race in Macau, 3rd in class. Ready to race. Any idea of who drove this one at Macau, and what subsequently happened to it? |

Yes, the Corgi 1/36-ish scale Mk3 Escort appeared in a few racing paintjobs- from memory as the Mike Smith 'Ilford Photo' prodsaloon and Barry Lee's 'Total' BTCC machine, as well as the Brooklyn one
Scalextric did a Mk3 Escort XR3i at one point, but I'm not sure if I remember any authentic touring car liveries on it- maybe 'Ilford Photo'? The Australian market did get the Scalextric Mk3 in Dick Johnson/Palmer Tube Mills green (also seen on the Scalextric Rover...), an even more improbable Gary Scott/Nissan version(!) and worst of all, in Peter Brock/HDT colours (both Marlboro and Mobil versions I think)!- I bet that last one went down really well- HDT colours on a Ford http://www.scalextricaustralia.com/auscars/escorts.jpg http://www.scalextricaustralia.com/auscars.htm There was an article on Mk3 Escort models in one of the diecast collecting mags a while back- I'll see if it lists the colourschemes for the Corgi version |

Ha ha, Mobil HDT livery on an Escort, now that takes some beating on a marketing front!!!!
Yes I think i've got old style Brooklyn and Total RS1600i's in a box somewhere, hence me asking. Have a feeling the Total car I had came with a rather weak rear axle arrangement (ironically may have been the case with the real one too?!!) |

Just reviving this one with a slightly odd, but still fairly on-topic question.
In 1986, BTCC entries were pretty poor- sometimes down to a dozen cars or thereabouts (think the low-point was something like 11 starters after a couple of cars didn't make it through qualifying at Donington early-season) As far as I can remember, at the Brands round in late August in an attempt to boost a small grid, several of the Brands Hatch Racing School Escort XR3s ran in the BTCC race, driven presumably by the School's instructors I can't lay hands on the relevant Autosport/Motoring News reports right now, but can anyone confirm whether this definitely happened, who the drivers were (as I recall, they included a number of well-known Formula Ford names of the period), whether they ran as part of the 1600cc class, or as an invitation class/'race within a race', and where they finished? Even better, does anyone have a full result (it's the only round that year I don't have results for outside the top 3) and any pics? If it helps, the race was also notable as it was one of the couple of appearances that year by Finnish rally driver Mikael Sundstrom, driving a Peugeot Talbot Sport UK-entered 205GTi (one of their regular rallycars I think)- as I remember, it was a wet race, and Sundstrom's rally skills came to the fore, bringing the little 1600cc Pug home 3rd overall, behind Rouse's XR4Ti and one of the Rovers... |

I also remember Sundstrom in the 205, a great performance and I think kicked off a huge outcry as to why there hadn't been a works PTS effort to that point, and whether there might well be one for 1987? Probably in terms of the 'why not' side of things, the 205 wasn't, toe to toe, a match for the RS1600 or the 16v Corolla (which wasn't regular until '87) so wouldn't have been as competitive but that the Brands conditions suited both car and cetainly driver! Certainly on the loose it was competitive, various class rally results would bear that out? |

I think there's been a couple out in CTCRC Classic Group 1, although they may have been XR3s or RS1600s (not i's).
Other than that, anything that takes a saloon of unspecified age. |
