Done and dusted for another year, all things being equal 'Weal meet again' or is it wheel? Whitsun Trophy, the usual carnage as one well known poster was heard to comment in the pit lane 'Hooligans'. Most of the racing was at least clean and green on this extremely fast circuit. Seemed to spend more time in the assembly area waiting for things to happen than usual this year, at least it gives one time to gather opinions on many varied subjects and to reminisce; Stirling did not drive one of those, did he?. Adverse comments must be reserved for the so called competitor and support park. The ablutions are in the least diabolical and an insult particularly to the male population where 5 wc cubicles had to suffice for the numbers present. Either his worshipfulness's organisation has sadly underestimated the numbers or there were an awful lot of folk who should not be situated in the park, the inspection of labels seemd to be very lax; and the facilities in the paddock area are a joke. With competitors contriuting to the effort the 'freebie' is not an accetable retort anymore.

I thought there was a lot of waiting around for things to happen and the programme was running an hour late by the end of Sunday. There were no incidents to cause lengthy delays so I can't really fathom why. Perhaps it was due to Sir Stirling's 80th Birthday tribute which must have been a logistical headache with 80 cars to marshal in which case I can't complain.

Saturday was run to schedule with Vimy taking off as Fordwater finished. I have been at clubbies that have gone behind schedule so I dont think we can blame them for that!!

I don't think that was necessarily the case. There was ample opportunity in my view to catch up. The wait between races was very long.

is the parade lap for winners a new thing ? seemed to waste a lot of time betwixt action, and the 'partners' video is painful

As the 4 wheeled, one legged rottweiler marshal on the assembly gate (!!), I can say some of the delays were caused by cars leaking oil that required clean-up on green flag laps, recovery of broken down vehicles post race, getting drivers into cars and ready to race, etc, and while each one of these is quite minor, when repeated frequently added up each time.
The 84 car parade for Stirling did indeed take some work, but we got it down to a fine art of getting the cars lined up during the previous race, but then found drivers and passengers dithering about as they weren't organised or even in the vicinity of their cars when the time came to start the parade!!!! From my perspective, passes are a concern as they found their way onto people who were nothing to do with the teams!!! So teams need to consider their own actions with this. Also, the assembly area is not meant to be a posers paradise so why are so many people (especially the ladies/girlfriends/long lost aunts) trying to access the area with team armbands when the area is clearly meant to be for drivers and mechanics only? If an accident were to occur there, Goodwood and Lord March would get it in the neck, yet who is the cause here? Something we all need to consider before next year's event. But despite all that, I have to say I had a great time, meeting so many great people and their cars. So thank you to you all that brought cars, dressed up, smiled and entered into the spirit of the event. See you all next year!!!!! |

I also agree with your rant about the people in the assembly area, but I think the Revival is also very much a social event, despite of the serious racing. It is all about finding a compromise between what the area can handle and what the people involved want. I am sure you had no problem letting Lady Susie into the assembly area and I did not see her wearing any armband at all... |

At least if the numbers are reduced in that ONE area, then anything can be dealt with efficiently and without having people not versed in motorsport standing in the way and causing delays. Even when the command to start engines had been given, they think they have the right to walk anywhere, including standing in the path of the cars!!!!! And if anything was to happen, you can guarantee it will be us marshals who would be blamed for the situation, not the person who wasn't actually contributing to the event. So where do we go with this one? Wait for something serious to happen and then have H&S invade us even more, or look inside ourselves for a solution? I favour the second approach, after all we are all adults. Quote:

I think that the truth is that the Goodwood Revival is a motor racing event for some of the competitors and some of the spectators. For the rest (and I include most of the American millionaires who drive their cars once a year) it is the experience of being at a brilliant retro theme park for a whole weekend.
I spoke to Ashley-Brown (who drove my Volpini in the Chichester Cup). He said that one Italian driver in an Apache overtook about five people on the green flag lap and then overtook him under the safety car on the entry to the chicane! |

Then he will have been reproted to Race Control by the marshals (the Safety Car infringement)

if I could make one suggestion..... after the race when the cars are released from the holding pen would it be possible to somehow cordon public away from the cars so they can get back to the paddock ASAP as the cars and drivers are hot!! This is of course only relevant to us lot in the cheap paddocks t'other side of the jump start lane - and as four wheeled one legged Rottweiler's go I found you very welcoming!!

Agree with you wholeheartedly. I found it very trying pushing my hot and oily 500 back to my paddock slot last year. Need a man with a red flag walking ahead! |

I won't talk about other areas but at the entrance of the assembly area is a white board saying "Drivers and mechanics only". The teams all know it, just they choose not to see it!!!!!!!! |

not only that but seeing the Fabri Bugatti 59 arriving at its place in far end of the public paddock in a big cloud of steam makes one really wonder....

I think drivers, crews and marshalls were all very long-suffering. I witnessed numerous occasions when very hot drivers & cars were blocked by crowds of people, not just the odd one or two, and yet I never heard a cross word although I'm sure there were some dark mutterings under the breath.
I also think that allowing so many people into the assembly area detracted from the drama of the race, here at least the drivers should be allowed a bit of space to focus on the job. The assembly area was just an extension of the paddock melee. |

Tiff was charming but had a torrid weekend in the car. He was flying in the first few laps of qualifying on Friday and suddenly stopped out the back of the circuit. The guys couldn't figure out what had happened and gave the car a good check over but there was much head scratching. Then a significant amount of finger pointing and several red faces when they realised they had forgotten to put fuel in the car...... Then in the race he had a misfire and it wouldn't pull over 6,000. A shame as I think he would have gone well. Never mind, it went reasonably well for me! |

Still looked to be going pretty rapid to me, for someone that didn't have more than 6000 revs!

As to comments by Steve Tarrant & henk4 re assembly gate and area, sorry, but all the totty at Goodwood is most a welcome sight to these ageing bones and for this meeting a very necessary intrusion, and yes I know when the last minute aggro rears it's ugly head in the confines of the shelter their presence can be slightly irritating. As to the crowds causing problems, they are the very reason we are there, without them no Goodwood, though having struggled through the crowd with starter pack and pit board that should be obvious to any one I am not a gatecrasher, to be asked for my thin card armband, which by Sunday has long been detached from the tape and stuffed in pocket, put all equipement down to retrieve it from said pocket just to appease the importance of a certain member of staff goes a long way to holding the show up even further. Note staff not marshal. If you keep your head whilst all around you are losing theirs....... |
