Actually, in all honesty, Glock, N Mansell, Pantano, Heidfeld, and DC all came up in conversation. Tongue in cheek for the previous comment, I was not impressed by Regent Street.

Good article, but absolutely no conclusion! What is the guy saying? Heidfeld and DC could maybe do the job but are uninspiring, Mika and JV forget it, others too risky to chance.

I guess reading that it's down to DC and Heidfeld, with DC edging it on experience.

Definately good link. With Fisi at Renault next year. I would like to see one of these three (Coultard, Heidfield, or Villenuve) in the seat next year.

I think Mark would beat each one, however I also think each one would bring a tangable quality to the team.

Coultard - Consistant point getter, good setup ability would partner Mark very nicely IMO. His problem the last 2 years has been qualifying. If they change it to the aggregrate of 12 laps. I think you'd see him start a little higher up the grid more constantly which would help him a lot.

Heidfield - a little unknown with some very impressive showings. Seems very quick and consistant and German.

Villenuve - Very very quick, a bit of a block head w/ lots of baggage. Not to mention seeing him on the podium next to Schumi would be entertaining to say the least.

BMW have repeatedly said that don't need a German driver - they already sell plenty of cars in Germany. From that perspective (ie marketing cars) they would go for an American if they could I guess, or maybe a big emerging market... anyhow - nationality of driver is virtually irrelevant is what I'm saying.

No need to get through to them - they said it themselves. It's everyone else (10/10th-ers) that just assumes that they would like a German.

I'm sure having a German driver was a factor in the early days of the project, when BMW Motorsport were pitching the proposal into the board for funding.

Now they just need the best person for the job.

I certainly hope so; F1 driver decisions aren't always about that.

Isn't it about time Heidfeld got the drive he deserves? He's yet to show what he can really do in F1, which I think is do a damn good job for Williams.

Please explain how what i said had any indication that BMW "needs" a

German driver? I listed the two most important aspects about him FIRST. "Seems very quick and consistant."

You see there's this thing called logic in that you list the most important qualities first and generally go down in order of importance. what was #3 in a list of 3 items? I could have listed 20 different qualities, and listed "being german" as #18 and that would still be a "necessity" by your view.

I only pointed out what I considered BMW's position to be.

And FWIW, please read my slightly later post, that although didn't have a winky, clearly indicated that it wasn't necessary to take a superior stance about others around here.

Let's keep to the subject. Who says what in what order is practically unimportant. Is DC going to get this drive or what?

Having said that....looking at FW/PH's some what patchy record of driver selection and management, maybe they should take a back seat and let BMW choose the 2nd driver..?

I think BMW will let Williams pick the drivers. I really dont think BMW are in this for the long term I give them another 5-7 years then a gap. They're looking closely at Moto Gp.

That's practically long term with most manufacturers. It'd make this spell much longer than the las spell they had.

BMW won't keep quiet (to Williams) about drivers and I'm sure William's will talk to BMW about them. It is a partnership after all. However the final decision will rest with Williams, as it always has done.
