Getting back to winter projects, have decided to get a decent heater system into the XK plus maybe power steering. Get the Escort with MSA papers. Still looking at the Fiesta and cannot mke up my mind, seems such a shame to scrap it as it was such fun and getting very quick.

What are you going to do with the Capri? The X Pack was a bolt on set of goodies in order to comply with the FIA group 2 regs extant from 1976 to1982. It only applied to the 3l because the 2.8i wasn't homologated for g2.

Those old 3 Litre Capri's were just the best ever. I never owned one but would often get the chance to do a road test. Happy days.

Ahh, the 'Humpy'..... Can remember the early ones having a lot of trouble with front wheel balance, but never missed the opportunity to 'check it on the road for you, Sir' after another session on the machine! Weren't quite so much fun as the Boss's Sunbeam Tiger, though......

Dynamically my 1972 V4 2.0l GTXLR was a lovely car on the road, once I'd tickled up the suspension and put better tyres on it. Not as fast as the 3 litre but much better turn in etc.

Mine's coming along (slowly). I am doing it the hard way with rotary wire brushes but there you go. I will get it all looking like this, effect minor repairs, Jenolite the floor pan then ZInc prime it.

I have had several Capris including a nearly new 2 litre 5 speed and by far the best handling albiet slowest accelerating was a gold 1300 kent model I had, the handling was on par with an Elan I swear. The fastest and most exciting was an ex-old bill 3 litre I bought direct at aution with smoke pouring out the back (Mk 1). I pulled the heads and it had a spanking new RS3100 engine in there and had blown a gasket into the valley an easy fix which was drawing in oil hence the smoke but the thing flew I am sure it was tuned.

I learnt to drive in part in my bros 1600gt, that was a lovely car and very quick. I also owned a 1600 GL from new in 1976, I sold it two years later for £250 more than I pad for it, probably the best car I owned as it was the first car I'd had with reclining seats.
I also had a couple of 3litre ones as well although I frightened the **** out of myself one night with my auto 3 litre when I got quite a bit sideways and as I floored it to get out of trouble my knee knocked the shift into neutral, I think someone was watching over me as the lamp-post came within a few inches of my driver's door. |

Looks like we need a 'My Capri was a....' thread!
Only one I owned was a 5 speed injection which was very nice to drive, although do remember going to the dealer launch of the Mk1 when it first came out. Sure that one on display was a 1300L model. Went with my mate and his Dad in their brand new 'Silver Fox' Escort GT- a really early one before they fitted the front arb. Jack Sears has a 3 litre GXL (or may be an 'E') he has owned since new! To echo an Iain phrase- Happy Days! |

Happy memories Al - they were quite fun to drive 'in anger'. Bit of a handful on the twisty bits especially in the wet and on ice but all the more entertaining for it.

Mine was a metallic green 3000GT XLR with a black vinyl roof which I paid £200 for & £325 to insure it @ 18!
I used to love opposite locking it around roundabouts - it used to stop people pulling out in front of me. It only lasted 3 months as somehow the engine didn't like constant redline spinning about in the snow, so it bent all the pushrods - cant understand why I bought a secondhand engine from a breakers yard but when I took the heads off I found out it was only a 2.5 so I got my money back & broke the car for a tidy profit |

I had a 2.8 Special for 3 weeks. Bought it for a club autotest on Boxing day where it was tremendous fun, never needed the windscreen wipers despite the mud and slush but did have to keep the door windows wound down to see where we was going
Sadly it was a short affair - let the missus use it as a hack to get to the station (just a mile away) but she wasn't as keen on drifting as me and after one big moment that was enough. Shame! |

I remember the first insurance I got in my own name was £11 on a 1959 Austin Mini, I thought that was horrendous.............even though my dad paid it.

Must admit I have a soft spot for the Capri, had a 3lt one just after they came out, my wife loved it as well and would use it to deliver flowers from her shop whenever possible. Sold it after I came to her shop just in time to see her disappear up the road sideways with my daughter leaning into the slide standing between the seats.

Capris......My sister loved her Mk1.5 Facelift 1.6.....Yellow with the black vinyl roof.....bought new and eventually written off by her daughter about 16 years later
BUt my best memories are of my mates 3.0 GTXLR, borrowed it once to tow my Mk1 Cortina to the bodyshop for inner wing repairs and new outer front wings.......my Dad was pioting the 'tina, and I sort of forgot he was there when I took off as I turned right at one junction....then glanced in the mirror to see him hanging on for grim death as the 'tina was flung around on the end of the towrope like a rag doll.......he did forgive me......eventually My mate then started road-rallying it, and after a few "incidents" took to fitting the front wings with pop rivets so that if he clipped a bank the wing just sheared of, and he could throw it in the back and refit it when he got home - before his Mum noticed........ |

Seeing the Capri thread at this time of year strikes a chord with me. Back in the late 60s when the Capri first came out my brother-in-law ordered a 3 litre in Aubergine with black vinyl roof and it looked the dogs doodahs. It was available for collection in Harrogate on Christmas eve and as he lived in Leeds and we were all going over on Xmas day he asked me to collect it and take it over for him. Half way to Leeds ( and travelling well within the running-in speed - honest!) the throttle assembly fell apart and we came to a sudden halt. Not much traffic around on Xmas day in those days so I took some cord off a present and jury-rigged the mechanism into working order. The only problem was that it was either full throttle or none at all so the rest of the journey resembled a kangaroo. Then he asked me if I'd go back to Harrogate in it to get it fixed after Xmas but at least I had the rest of the day for my more mechanically minded brother to make a better fix.
