The cars are locked together nose on gearbox, or so it seems. I'm not sure it would be possible to engineer a fully protective design in such a circumstance without radically changing the concept of single seater racing to the point that it would be more sensible to do something completely different. And that, of course, is an option that one can already choose. In this case the grass would have been a better option but my guess is that in a tight pack mirrors might have been a greater distraction. No doubt the information is available to those who need to know. Thinking about it from a slightly different angle - it's remarkable that both drivers survived. Not so long ago that might not have been the case for either of them. Let's hope for the best for all concerned. Last edited by grantp; 19 Apr 2017 at 19:00. Reason: Typo correction |

Delta was well on his way to Hockenheim this morning, so I've checked the weather likely on his arrival. He's missed the 'light snow' that was forecast for earlier but looks like night frost and single figures tomorrow.......
Ah, the joys of racing in April! |

Many times these esteemed pages criticise modern racing, but in this one respect historic motor sport falls way behind. |

I spoke to a friend this morning who is in Hockenheim running Lotus Cup Europe & he didn't mention the weather so I assume it was OK. He went down yesterday.

The fund is over the 500k mark! Sadly money won't replace what he's lost but I hope it makes his life better.

#BillyWhizz*- message of support from the BTCC
The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship will show its support for British F4 driver Billy Monger with prominent*#BillyWhizz*signage set to adorn all 32 cars at Hampshire’s Thruxton Circuit, on 6-7 May. Title sponsor and official tyre supplier to the championship, Dunlop, has*generously agreed that the message of support will take*over its*prime area on each BTCC car’s front number plate position, as the motor sport community continues to back Billy following his saddening accident at Donington Park. A crowdfunding site has been set up to raise funds for Billy and his family, to contribute towards the specialist treatments that will be needed for his recovery. To donate to this fund please visit:*http://bit.ly/2pggxoJ. |

This evening news reported that Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton had both supported the appeal, which had exceeded well over £500,000.
I think that events like this transcend 'categories' and are well worth inclusion on this forum. |

According to social media Jenson and Max V both put down 15k. Nice to see the stars putting back into the sport.
Mind you those of us in the west country will be aware of Jenson doing that a lot. Couple of years back he brought his McLaren to the streets of his home town, Frome. Proper bloke. Sent from my EVA-L09 using Tapatalk |

IMHO it would be good to see the trust set up to manage the funds (ultimately) considering donations to the Air Ambulance, Marshals and rescue crews involved.
The FiA have impounded both cars for inspection (I guess normal) and accident report. There is talk that the chassis crash structure (same is used in several countries) has been the subject of concern previously. |

I wonder why the car that he hit was traveling so slowly/stopped. It appears from the video that there was no time for flags, then again which post would have best sight anyway?

It's great to see the fantastic support for Billy Monger after this horrendous accident, and very heartening to see. Unfortunately I've not heard of anything support-wise for Patrik Pasma, the guy who's car Billy ran into. I accept that thankfully he didn't suffer the horrendous physical injuries, but the trauma & responsibility he must be feeling, and the knock-on effect that will have on his family, and his team is not to be underestimated.
Plus, I think we should also give a thought to the marshals and rescue crew members who dealt (so well) with the aftermath of this crash, how must they be feeling now they've gone back into their normal daily lives? As I've said, I don't want to take anything away from the fantastic support that Billy Monger has received, I just think it's important to think of the other people who will have been affected by this tragic event. |

On a lighter note, think I've discovered one reason why BT are 'underperforming' with Openreach (we are told)- one of their vans has been parked a few doors down from me for at least 3 months, and hasn't moved in that time! |
