Did you source different disks?

When the car was testing at Mallory it looked to my inexpert eye like the process involved bedding in new brakes with a heat cycle or two to start with. But that didn't stop you having the problems at the 360.

No, we will be sourcing new disc material but we had no time before Brands. We ran old pads on new discs, three laps then in and let them cool, then back out again.

Interesting.

Maybe the trick for the disk/pad material combination is the old pad to start off the new disk? At last the pads would have been heat cycled already and presumably would be less prone to despositing material on the new (receptive) disks.

Rikki,

Many thanks for that.
Timing had somehow slipped and all the exhaust valves were kissing pistons and of course as seen in previous threads i destroyed one head, barrell and piston. Working on rebuilding engine as we speak but real hold-ups are financial. By the time its done i reckon i could have cleared the Portugese and Greek deficits !!

Should just stick to my V8 small block.

You were missed at the Heritage Snetterton race last week. Hope that six hour victory did not damage anything other than the fuel bill?

Regards,

GT.

Rikki,

Great pictures. Thankyou.
Good one of Al about to gobble me up just before my engine went bang.
I really have built it as close as i can afford to the original 917Ks, save for the engine and gearbox. I have had the chance to buy two original engines in the past but at over £250,000 each i had to respectfully decline!
Al, Now you can see why i have to build replicas.

Still working on the perfect bank job so that i can buy an original, and then probably worry about using it too much.

After all the comment on here about fakes and replicas I thought it was great to see it out there it looked superb in the flesh, a friend of mines friend owns a genuine one may even be Martin Birane not sure as I printed a replica ECU on board overlay panel for it but who ever it is must be minted and if you cannot afford the real thing yours is certainly a very good compromise. I dont care for static display fake F1 cars but have no problem with a proper detailed working example like yours.

Ah,of course, thats why the engine went pop!
Graham,I hope you will soon get the engine put right because you will be more than welcome next year as well. Replica? so what, you are not trying to pass it off as anything else. A friend has one of the GTD 40's,spent all winter re-working the rear suspension to look a bit more like the original,it should work better as well.
