Thing is, if it does prove to be a genuine TwinCam you are buying the id and that is worth a bit. There are no pics of chassis plate though, or suggestion that one is present, but several features on the car are correct for that model.
Al, a barn find Mini 'basket case' that just happened to be one of the first few ever made sold at auction for over £40k recently, which was a crazy price. Even the experts agree on that one! As for winter project- many winters...... |

Mike,
Agreed. Al, I watched some of the jubilee stuff over the weekend and I was surprised to hear that the sales of boats (of all sizes) was actually on the increase in the UK. The person saying this was of course the head of the boat manufacturer's guild, or whatever and I would have applied the usual pinch of salt, except we know that race cars are selling at all levels, from collectibles to the run of the mill (like ours). So, I'm not sure why you would think that the world has gone mad. If this is a genuine car then it'll be worth restoring. If it isn't, the engine alone would be worth 5 figures. |

I thought you'd pick up on that. I guess your thoughts are why bother with a decent piece of engineering when you can stick a slogging V8 in it? Well it is a school of thought but you don't get many places to race a V8 Escort. It's all about context. Either you are happy plodding around in a yank tank or you want something that takes a bit of driving. Ergo 10k for a genuine BDA would be good value.

Just to put the cost thing in context:
http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listin...da_sweden.html http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listin...t_rs_1600.html Not sure if either of the above are sold but the prices reflect the market. |

Ha ha I really don't think you understand the first concept of driving a 'Yank Tank' you should have got down to Brands at the weekend and then see if youthink its so easy , tell you what my video should be loaded soon so be sure to catch a look.
My point was nothing to do with that at all, I have owned two twin cam Escorts in the past one a full rally spec version and yes it went like a scolded cat and I easy out ran the old bills Jag when they chased me once and I also owned a bog standard one and an Elan so I do know them well and have rebuilt the engines plus I built a few pre cross flow engines using the twink block. No my point is you are buying blind, the thing has sat there for many years so for all you know the engine may be seized solid and just scrap metal value and probably is. Look at the state of it under the bonnet the carbs will never work again its just scrap. |

Hmm,
You never know what I've driven in my time, but that's another story. However I take your point concerning the state of the exterior of the engine, but what we don't know is what it's like inside. The shell is rotten, but if the whole lot were to be sold for around 8k then I suspect there'd be another twink on the road/track in very short order. The problem I have with the description is the gearbox. I would have expected a ZF to be in there not a 2000E. Incidentally the TVR V8 engined escort that we are all familiar with is up for sale at around 15k last time I looked. |

I will also put it into context, there was a fair amount of head scratching at Brands at the weekend as people couldnt seem to grasp how a later model camaro (mine now I have sorted it a bit) was beating the 1st Gens and Mustangs in my class with values way in excess of 100k yet I doubt no one would be interested in the car if I tried to sell it and its never been used on the road so the shell is as it left the factory!!! The whole thing is daft IMHO I think its all quite funny its also why some Historic series are now failing as the cars are simply too valuable to risk on the track.

I stand to be corrected but I thought that was a BDA.

No it clearly states Twin cam Pete which was a factory offering with the gearbox as listed in the ad. BDA we would have been talking a different kettle of fish for sure. As I recollect the word 'Lotus' was not used with the Escort it was known as the 'Twin Cam' think there was a fall out or something with Lotus.

Ok, I'm happy to be corrected on that, in which case I'd agree that the engine is not worth 10k.

It's a Lotus twin cam probably worth about £500 in the state It's in in the photograph. If the car is genuine you'd only be buying the history as the rest of it doesn't look too clever, maybe one for Mike Brewer to upset Ed China with.
