Perhaps not having watched much coverage before (my bad....) meant that I wasn't signed up to the Pye Fan Club. I thought that the racing was marvelous and I was perfectly happy with the commentary. Yes, there were a few errors that even I picked up, but as I'm not a historic 'buff' my enjoyment of the event wasn't affected. The Pye thing is a bit like when RLM dropped Ian Titchmarsh from their commentary team - I considered it (and still consider it today) absolute sacrilege.

The highlight of the weekend for me was Riccardo Patrese in the Brabham BT52 what a car & so much more appealing than the modern junk. If only they could have persuaded Nelson Piquet into his old car too, and with Herbie Blash overseeing them, what more could you want?
Ironically for me, I was job-hunting at the beginning of 1982 & Brabham was one place I contacted. By reply, I got a two-line reply from Bernie telling me to call a certain number & much to my amazement when I called a voice answered with "Ecclestone 'ere". Anyway I went down to see him & he genuinely tried to create a job, bringing together various Buying operations. He and the factory manager eventually concluded there was three-quarters of a job, but reckoned Herbie could do with some help with team admin. He was away at the time testing in South Africa so would I call back in a couple of weeks? Unfortunately when the time came he said he didn't need help, but they told me to call every month or so in case the situation changed. Even more ironically, I moved house a couple of years later & started to drink at the King's Head, Shepperton - where I drank many a pint with Herbie. Never did tell him he did me out of a job though... |

I cant even imagine what it takes to maintain and drive those machines. They are gladiators, a lot of respect for them.

I went to Goodwood on Saturday, fist time at the members meeting for me - have to say there was some great racing and unsurprisingly some great machinery. The Hill/Huff tussle was great as was the scrap for the lead in the SF Edge race, lots of great side by side racing in the other races too. The highlight for me though was the GT1 demo - those cars running as the sun set was a glorious sight and sound, they may not have been racing but they weren't hanging around.

Terrific weekend - I enjoyed every second and returned home tired , happy and broke. Alice Powell was a breath of fresh air - Marcus is a walking Wikipedia , brilliant for an entirely enthusiast audience but can wear his learning heavily for less specialised ears. I winced at hearing Turn One but so what , she's young , very competent and I am not too traumatised . But I was when her colleague talked about bloody 'Brands' of car on the grid. Eek.

The Talbot 105 JJ93 driven by Michael ***** is owned by him . I have owned the car on six occasions since 1988!Sold it to Michael about six years ago Up to that point he used to race one of my Talbots! He is part of our Talbot team is about to start racing and rallying the works car GO 52. He won a historic pre war car rally week before Goodwood so it’s the ultimate all round car. Gareth in the Alta had major damper problems that came apparent on Saturday caused by bumpy tack but too late to do anything before race . Idea was to annoy Richard Bradley in Aston for a few laps before it came undrivable and that’s what happened. Richard confirmed how leary it looked when following Alta. Be back to normal for the race around a smooth Donington next week! |

Unlike the Marshals, Clerks, Stewards etc the Commentators like the Scrutineers are paid to be there. |

I must confess to a new found / rekindled interest in cars like Alta and Talbots thanks to your involvement plus of course the photos of these cars and others from the much missed Bauble. |

Bentleys'image here belong to Le Mans history. Strange enough, the Blowers are often pictured when none won the great race. Popular imagery I suppose.
