Most classic cars were only made to a given tolerance just like modern stuff, it's just that later car bodies are better controlled in that department.
I would think that a lot of people would be surprised if they measured the wheelbase "accurately" on their daily runabout ! Most Anglias I have had for competition use I have had to move various mounting points to make it drive the same on left and right corners and have always had to use different sized lowering blocks on the rear axle to fine tune the spring rates. Of course some cars have to run compliance bushes depending on what series they run in whereas with adjustable rose joints you can get over some problems easier. |

As Gordon has just said, using rose joints is easy to get a car set up but rj's aren't legal for App K are they? |

No Peter. but If there's a desire to use them . . . .
Cortina shells are pretty consistent, if straight . . . Andy Mesham of the CTCRC has measured lots . . . his comment on mine was it was the only one with strut topa dimensions outside any he had seen . . . every other was inside . . . . but withing tolerance, for some of the std dims he had +/- 3mm was typical. |

Another thought on tolerances.
Way back in the mid 70s I was driving around at work in a well used Escort van. It got to be a bit encient so a new one was purchased. When I picked it up from the dealer it was fitted with 3 Pirellis and a Goodyear. The dealer was persuaded to swap the Goodyear for a 4th Pirelli .. The thing was OK, for a new van with a tight engine, but noa and again (well, quite a lot after a thousand miles or so) under braking it would pull strongly to the left. Or the right. It was never possible to guess which way it might go. But you could be reasonably certain that straight was not a regular option. The dealer started to investigate it according to the Ford step by step process. I thiink we got to the second set of disks and pads and some bushes and were about to change the calipers. Nothing seemed to make any difference and half way through at about step 30 of 60 we got to 15k miles an no resolution in sight. However I had hammered the rear tyres by running high pressures for full load at all times, even when empty. (It helped "agility" on roundabouts) and they were worn flat and in need of replacement. Front not far off either and one had had a puncture repair iirc so, being Goodyear sponsored, we had a set of Goodyears fitted. The brake problem immediately disappeared. Never returned in the rest of the time I was using it - about another 40k miles I think. Handling was better too although roundabouts in the dry became relatively humdrum. |

Not exactly a winter project, but it was 0 degrees today and have been getting all the odd bits ready for return of Canary's engine and gearbox.
The ZF box is QR so still have bellhousing and clutch op mech. Clutch fork rocks on a bobbin that is similar if not same as original 2000E, but mine has sheared off where threaded into housing! Fortunately the fork can't really go anywhere and is clipped to bobbin so has still been working. Wonder for how much longer, though? On investigation, it looks as if the tapped hole the broken bit was in is out of line with the slave cylinder and release bearing carrier, and also now a bit worse for wear after removing the broken threaded stub, which was loctited in! What would like to do is fit a helicoil (other inserts are available ) but try and drill for it 'off centre' to correct the mis-alignment. Alternative would be to drill and tap the bobbin and put a bolt through from behind. Mmmmm, one for a machine shop, methinks...... |

Timeserts are great
Winter project update . . . The Tornado has been on a table, the good news is the chassis is straight and true . . . ther front suspension needed minor adjustment and works very well . . . . the rear is a little wayward, firsdt things first the chassis needs some repairwork and the trailing arms also, in theory its not a bad little car apparently . . . . oh, and the new FiA engine in the Cortina started first time, sounding pretty lively, off to the rollers tomorrow hopefully. |

Funny you mention that
I have a set of blue prints and a few original drawings here for a 16v Ford top end on a 120E 1500 block . . . dated 1963. . . . on Willment drawing sheets . . . . with an ammendment and letter from Harry Munday, to Jeff Uren . . . . it must predate the Cosworth BD . . . . |

on the Imp stand at race Retro they had the twin cam Lynton Imp engine that was being developed in one of the workshops at the Fortis Green workshops when i worked there in the 60's. I remember the designer produced two cylinder version and had installed it in a custom built and somewhat strange motorcycle. I tried to talk to them about it but the stand seemed to be dominated by some loud voiced bagpipe playing kilt wearing Scotsman so I gave up in the end.
